Pipe threader (which one ?)

Hey fellas, - I need a pipe threader,- 1/4" - 1.5" dies. Won't be using allot, but want one that's that's going to work when needed. I've seen quite a few of these kits out there very cheap, -

http://www.ebay.com/itm/330679804600...84.m1438.l2649

That's just it, very cheap can be scary.

I'm thinking I would be further ahead finding an older used RIGID (ratchet set), -would like an old 700 series threader, if I could find one reasonably priced (doubtful).

Going after this one currently, not sure I'll win, but I think it's all I need besides a cutter.

What do you think, - new cheap any good ? Or stick with a used RIGID ?

Thanks!

Rigid. If you go cheap the dies will not last and you won't be able to find the right ones. A rigid ratcheting will last forever.

Thanks, I thought that might be the better choice.

Wow, got it for cheap.

I was going to suggest trolling the local CL listing, in the Chicago area I see all sorts of shops for sale from plumbing to solid surface counter tops.

That unit should serve you well, and if something happens to one of the dies, you can replace them each enough.

Yea, the cheapest new set that included one more alloy die (3/8) was about $270. The 12R set. Average price for new w/shipping would of been close to three hundy.

I like that when no one bids against yuh.

Yea , everything looked good. From what I recall, you can get a rough idea how used they are from looking at the paint on the die heads. The paint usually doesn't last that long with continuous use. - Just a rough idea.

Now I need a cutter (Ridgid). Found only two so far, -cheap, but those auctions have just started without a "buy now" price. I haven't check Amazon yet.

You'll also need one of these, unless you already have it.

Wouldn't want to buy it new......check out the price.

Yea, I have a couple of those, - both shop vises have an integrated pipe vise. I think I'm just about set. Except for oil, might get a better reamer. That's not a problem, just up the street.

You did really good, just looked and the best I can find with a quick look ( ridgid only ) was 185.00 for a set with 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4 and 4 steel ridgid pipe wrenches ( looks like a 12", 2 16"? and a 24" )

there were a few bids on that auction, but not what I would expect for such a low price.
