Selling a car on Craig's list or Ebay, opinions?

I just ordered a new F150 and got a great price on the truck without a considering my trade. After the price was settled, I then asked about the trade. Their offer of $300 was not practical, my car runs great and still looks good, but it's old (1997). It didn't seem like there is any more negotiating with him on this, so I declined. Looking for around $1000-1200.

I am thinking about putting it on Craig's list which I never used or eBay. Are there advantages of either? Do you go down to the motor vehicle office with them to change over the title? I have never sold a car like this, I would appreciate any helpful hints.

Thanks.

Just list it on CL with a picture or two. I sold my 1996 Mazda with 222k miles for $1k a few weeks ago in just 4 hours.

Not sure where you live so I don't know how your private party sales work. Here you just sign a bill of sale, sign the back of the title and you're on your way. The buyer takes care of the DMV, titling/licensing issues.

Craigslist is the way to go. Free and gets tons of traffic. As long as you aren't asking too much, it'll sell quickly.

I definitely agree with the other two replies. I sold a car on craigslist in 2 days.

Def. Craigslist. Ebay would rape you on fees. Probably get a lot more local lookers on CL anyway

Sold my 2005 on craigslist. Just get cash or if a large amount, a cashiers check from a reputable bank.

Craigslist worked for me. I used:

ebay classifieds (free) - not one call
Flyer on the wall at Napa - one call
CraigsList - 6 calls, including the guy that bought it

In MN, the buyer fills in one part of the title, then you tear that off and send it to the State.

Also, you should take a photo of the buyers drivers licence.

If you use craigslist, put it slightly higher than you want to sell it for (if you want $1200 put $1500). The people who buy stuff of Clist are the cheapest people you will ever meet. Anything that cheap should sell pretty quickly.

I haven't tried myself, but my brothers wife uses Craigs list to sell. She sells things that you might think no one would want. Can't believe what some things are worth to people. Yea, -Craigs list works.

I sold my Mustang on Craigslist. The guy showed up, gave me a $200 deposit and picked it up a few days later after giving me the rest of the money. He was from about an hour and a half away and picked it up with a truck and trailer.

After getting the deposit I went to the dmv and took it off the road and then called my insurance company and cancelled the insurance. I signed the title and gave it to the buyer and he was going to go to the dmv on his own time.

I listed the car for $5000 when I really wanted $4000 and he gave me $4100.

It's a 97 Pontiac Sunfire with 147K miles on it. I'm going to repaint the hood and roof, then it should look really good. It seems GM cars have a problem with the paint on the horizontal surfaces, this the second GM car I have had that did the same thing - losing the clear coat, just a dull black underneath. Looking at other Craig's list and eBay ads, people are asking what I am wanting with the same faded paint job on the hood/roof. Maybye I shouldn't even bother trying to paint those.

He bought new at a dealership.
They aren't interested in a 1997 anything. Banks and new dealers don't finance that old.
Sometimes a dealer will keep a cherry on his lot if he knows he can easily flip it for more.
A new dealer here took a 1995 Toyota 4Runner in trade that was mint inside and out w/85k.
They weren't a Toyota dealer and it got hauled off to auction.
