was ready to purchase

I was at a dealer haggling over a 2001 xl sport 4.2 l sc/ss. and the dealer is atamin about going below invoice and he wants the $500 rebate too. I will pay invoice , apply the rebate, but the other sticking point is my trade a 98 xlt long bed ranger Mt/ 3.0 V6 no air no power, rear slider. 31 bfg's with brushguard, clean mechanically sound, but has 94,500 for milage, dealer only wants to give me $5000 grand for it.

I am looking for advice, the 2001 is a 4x2 and winter will be here soon after the 2002 arrive. I know that. I told him I am only buying the truck if it is a deal. It will be a year old in 6-8 weeks regardless of milage. Anyone know of any secret rebates going on? I know they get truck for memo so they make a profit regardless.
what is fair?

Lightbulb Sell it yourself

When ever you trade a vehicle into the dealer you are paying him to sell it for you.
You didn't expect him to sell for you for free did you ??
List it in the paper, get what it's worth (more if you are lucky) take the cash to the dealer and put it down on your new truck.
Dealer may even lower the price of the new F150 since he doesn't have to deal with your trade in.

we have a lemon law in MA, so private sales of a vehicle can be a pain. Not to mention the hassle of having to deal with test pilots.

Lightbulb The Hassle

Is what you are paying the dealer to handle.
He has to take the lemon risk, pay a salesperson and make a profit.
I doubt the dealer has any recourse againt the previous owner if the car turns out to be a lemon.
Here in SC anyting all cars are sold AS-IS unless you have a written warranty.

The lemon law in Mass does not apply to private sales.

When you write up the bill of sale you include "as is condition".

The sale is final when the title is signed over and the bill of sale is signed and the money transferred.

Also, with trade-in, you get some tax benefit. I probably could've sold my last car ('99 Lexus RX300) for a couple grand more in private sale, but I traded in, and was able to knock that much off the taxable sales price of the new truck. And with county and city tax added to state sales tax, it turned out pretty favorable.

do you have a Carmax in Massachusetts???

I sold my '99 F150 XLT quad cab sport to them. The dealer did not want to give me a good deal on the truck so I was getting up to walk out and the salesman told me before i say hell with the deal to take the truck to Carmax. So I did, there appraiser took the truck for a drive, looked it over, went in wrote it up and handed me the offer. There offer was what I was looking for. They said it is not the trade in value and it is not retail, they told me that they offer what they would expect to pay for the truck from an individual. I went home pulled my stereo system out and went back the next day gave them the truck and the title and they gave me the check. Then i went and got my 2000 F250 SD PSD extended cab

I couldn't believe how easy carmax was. I took my dads 2000 Suburban offer there not 2 months later. Same thing more than what trade in was.

I know a guy who walks into a dealership with a deal in mind. He rips 3 $100 bills in half and gives three halves to the salesman and tells him if he makes the deal, he gets the other sides of the bills. Claims it works 9 times out of 10.
