Oil Filter Question

Not sure where to put this, but...

Went to the parts store today to get a filter for my oil change. Got the Motorcraft FL400S, like always. My question is the old filter with the exact same numbers was about 3/4 of an inch shorter than the new one.

Anybody know how come. It's not a problem, I just thought it was weird.

My Lightning uses an 820S and it is also smaller than before. Probably just a cost saving move for Ford.

The Motorcraft filters used to be made by Purolator and may still be, so I'm not worried about quality. The only difference is a little less oil capacity.

Yes, but the new one is larger. Usually they go the other way.

I was just wondering.
