My friend seems to think that he is a god when it comes to making decisions about vehicles. And ive told him everything i have wanted to do to my truck and he seems to think it is a waste and that when it dies i should just get a new truck. It has a 193000 miles and im expecting the transmission to go eventually but the body is in great shape.... what should i do keep it till it dies or just fix it up
Keep it if you love it. A engine or tranny is far cheaper than buying a new one and insurance is higher too. You probably know your truck inside and out. Do what YOU want to DO. You don't need your friends approval for anything. Many people think they are gods..but in the end they all die like the rest of us...lol
Depends on what you are talking about.
Investing the cost of the truck into it again @ 193K, might not be the best use of money.
If you are talking about spending money in drive line, and the body is straight, then that is a good use of money ( it will be close to new when done, for a fraction of the price ).
Got any hint of what you are talking about ?

well right not the first im going to replace is the tranny, then i want to get a 3 inch lift with 33" tires and a brush gaurd with some kc lights dual exhaust and cold air intake.... thats about it right now... there are smaller things i want to do like get it undercoated but otherwise not a whole lot
Tell your buddy paying $500+ a month on a payment or even vast amounts of depreciation on a newer one is a waste. If you are buying a newer used truck it is a gamble as well because you will likely never know the true history of what it has been through and maintenance history of it. The newer one could very well give you the same amount of repair bills as the older one plus the 5-8-10-15k up front initial cost. Depending on how long you have owned your truck you probably have a good idea of how mechanically sound it is.
well i have had it about 6 mos and in those six months the only thing i have had to do is change the oil twice and the all the front and rear breaks. And im about to change out the 7 year old battery that is in it. So in all honesty the only mechanical thing wrong with it is the tranny and even then it isnt to bad.
My thoughts....Several years ago many police departments started looking for ways to lower their vehicle costs. The cottage industry that sprang up I think speaks volumes. Companies started that would replace the parts that wear out with hard use (engine, suspension, tranny, etc). The cost of a new car was approx 25-30k. Total cost to refurbish the vehicles was in the neighborhood of 10-15k.

If you are going with a lift, I would start out with the trans work 1st ( to make sure it is going to hold up to the change ).
Not too sure what MY you have, but a lift is generally a movable item between MY ranges, so if something did happen you could pull it and move it to another vehicle, so that is not an issue.
Same for the CAI ( can be moved between MYs ) , but prior to spending the money you might want to take a look at the GOTTS mod in the How To forum.
Exhst, undercoating and lights not an issue ( movable / low cost items ).
You already went through the brakes, you have the trans work on the list and the motor seems solid. The body is straight.
What more could you want ?
You are going to have just as good if not better than a newer used truck at less cost, without any questions on the trans / motor.
Why buy new and take that cost in the shorts ?
Your friend that seems to think he has all the answers, forgets the money part of the equation he is talking about.
The money you are thinking of putting into the truck are well spent on a truck w/ a straight body.
After you get done with the trans and lift, what is left ? The motor, which is still going to be cheaper to get a reman block ( if bad enough ) and then you have a truck that is going to go another 190K miles.
Just spend the money in the correct order ( trans work prior to lift, and then knowledgeable lift installer ) and you will be fine.
