Smile First vehicle?

When I turned 16, I bought a 1978 Ford F-250 Custom for $800. It had been a tire truck, and it had almost 300,000 miles on it. It had a 400 (not 351m) automatic, and no tailgate, and the bed was broken in half and it would just flap in the breeze as I drove. Sounded like armageddon when I crossed railroad tracks. It had no radio, power nothing, automatic a/c (holes in the floor), and I had to use vise-grips to turn on the windshield wipers. It was as rough as they come, but it is one of only two vehicles I have ever owned that never left me on the side of the road, the other being my `97 Lariat. What were y'alls first vehicles, and how do they match up against mine? Almost forgot, the `78 was "Kwik-Shop Spray-on brown" with white interior and a bench seat, that always had that nice, sought-after "school-bus" smell.

Talking 1977 Dull Yellow Mercury Monarch

My first car, bought for $300. It belonged to some little old lady, who happened to be a smoke fiend. The ash tray was completely full, and had even overflowed and went behind the dash. There was a nice brown film covering the yellow vinyl seats, the brown dash, and the windows. That thing was a tank, tho. Ran it to the ground. My Dad sold it after I got my first F-150 (89, 5.0L, 5-speed) for $100 and a really nice 12 ga. shotgun!

85 F-150 Power everything 165,000 miles
I drove it 28 days and plowed into the back of a Dodge Caravan which in turn plowed into the back of about a 83ish Buick Regal.

The front of my truck was at least 1 foot shorter than factory.
I drove several more months till I blew the headgasket, the water pump leaked and I had no room to change it ...wasn't really worth all that much after my customizing it hehe
Wish it had gotten something not as nice to destroy but oh well

53' Dodge Custom P/U (had 3 windows in the back) Paid $150 for it and it paid for itself in 2 weeks hauling scrap metal. Put a connecting rod through a piston racing it. Flat head six cylinder. Starter pedal above the gas pedal. Six volt, positive ground! Had a blast with that truck though! Summer of 73'! ennis

Brown (and rust)72 LTD Wagon. It had a 400ci with a 2 barrel carb. I got it for $150. It had A/C and a power rear window. The only problems I had with it was the battery holder broke (rusted through) and I got a cool light show from under the hood one night and keeping gas in it. (the gauge was broken) Being 16 and having a car that size I did alot of driving.

92 Ranger extended cab. Sold it a year ago to buy my full size. Great truck, had no big problems with it at all.

Hey Dreamin, one of my good friends had a couple of EXP's. Those were a blast!

First car

Mine was a '54 Ford Fairlane. This was the summer of 1967. I was 14 years old, when we could still get our license at that age in Texas. What a car! It ran so quietly, my friends often thought it had died when stopped at a red light. Had it a couple of years and replaced it with the most beautiful '57 Chevy two door hardtop you ever saw!

1949 Chevy with a "three on the tree"! $50 dollars cash and sold if for $50 when I bought my '57 Chevy. Sold it for $50 when I bought my '64 Chevy for $350. Thought that was too much money, but had to have it! My opinion only, but I thought that was the last great year for Chevy. Had lots of other cars, trucks and bikes since those days when I was 16 - 17. Glad I had all of 'em except a '65 Pontiac that didn't last one day - timing chain broke and ruined the engine. Had it towed to the dealer and had the tow truck driver drop it in their driveway. When the salesman called to ask what was up, I said I had the bank stop the check and the car is theirs. They said they'd sue - I said great! Lots of luck taking a 17 year old kid to court. They dropped it and I bought another heap elsewhere.

A 1975 Cutlass Salon that my neighbor owned from day one for $200 in 1985. It had over 120,000 miles on it. I learned everything with that car. Every system needed some TLC and in the matter of 3 months I had her running sweet. I drove it until it had 230,000 miles on it and it still did over 130 MPH with a little blowby on the untouched engine and heads! I sold it to a friend of mine who took it up to 300,000 miles and finally found another 75 Salon to replace it with. The only major thing that I can remember going bad was the 350 transmission at about 250,000 miles. Not so bad for a car that had never been treated correct from the first owner until I got it.

My first car was a'56 Chevy Belair that was given to me from a friend in the summer of '73 who had bought it for the engine & transmission. the car was pretty much ragged out & had the usual midwest rust--the front seat was hanging out of the floorboards! I fixed her up though, installed a 409 engine & 4 speed transmission that I had that came out of a '62 Impala. The car was a lot of fun in my highschool days, I sold it in the spring of '76

Now don't everybody start drooling but my first car was a 1971 Ford Custom 500. You know, the one that was the size of the the big old LTD.

And your not going to believe this. That big hog would seat 6 and and me six guys out the NFL if need be. Too make matters more suprising: It had a straight (or was it a slant) 6 banger and a 3 speed on the column!

But it was one good car, I'll have to say. I bought it from an uncle's mother. She was recently widowed and couldn't drive the thing.

No power anything. I had to put a radio in it!

But when we all wanted to go somewhere (and since nobody every had much $ for gas) I drove a lot of places in that old boat.

How things have changed:
1971 Ford Custom 500
1981 Ford Pinto Wagon (ok, I was really stupid here!)
1966 Ford LTD
1981 Isuzu P'up (pickup)
1990 Honda Civic (still own, and is the best running car I've ever owned)
1994 Chevy Lumina Minivan (the biggest piece of crap I ever owned)
1998 Ford Taurus (still owned)
and the new King at my how below
