I Disagree with Motor Trend
i dont blame you. Dodge has figured this out too:

5.7L V8 with 360 hp/390 lb ft of torque, with a Mercedes transmission (
) versus 3.5L V6 with 290 hp/255 lb ft of torque. Jeeze, what a fair competition. Why don't they use the Expedition with a 5.4L V8 producing 310/365?

That durango should not be pulling against an explorer. Should be up against the expedition as you said. What idiots
Actually they should be using a front wheel drive minivan against it if they wanted a "fair" comparison. Having had a 97 mountaineer and now an 03 aviator, the switch to uni-body & fwd has made my interest in it disappear.
That video = Crap, like everyone said, not a fair comparison and you can even tell, whoever is driving the explorer just has thier foot on the brake.
The front wheel drive part doesn't bother me so much, because I would be purchasing a 4wd model, but not super happy to learn that it is a uni-body though.....

The video demonstrates that the Explorer isn't the same type of vehicle it used to be. It's a big car now. Both vehicles are classified as midsize SUVs. I think that while it's not a "fair" test, it's a valid one. A lot of people in this thread didn't know it was on the same platform as the Taurus, and this is a truck site full of enthusiasts... I'm sure the average person doesn't have a clue.
The new Explorer is exactly what it has been purchased for in the past. The minute percentage that actually seriously off-roaded one (I was one of them), or towed heavily with one, will be disappointed. The large amount of people who wouldn't even look at one, because it was too trucky, will be thrilled.
There is a reason that sales are through the roof.
MT is trying to be the "rebel with a cause." They seem to have a serious hardon for anything Ford, except the Mustang, which they love. They hated the Focus. They hated the Explorer so much, that they basically said it was one of the worst vehicles ever built. They are full of poop.
I have crawled around a new Explorer Limited, and was very impressed. The interior quality and features are amazing. My 68-yr-old Mother, loved playing with the MFT. I had to pry my 9-year-old out of the back seat. Every publication that is not an enthusiast publication have viewed the Explorer, and the EB Explorer very favorably. They say the 4cyl moves the vehicle pretty much the same as the V6, except the boosted mill has more torque down low (look at the torque curves of the two engines). This makes sense, seeing as how it is turbocharged.
Read anything that MT prints on Ford, critically. Do your own research. It is almost as if, since Ford has been getting such good press, they HAVE to go against the grain to sell issues.
As for the EB engine itself. Oh yeah, a DI, turbocharged 4cyl is soooooo complicated. Please. This is not the 80's. The turbo is water cooled, and the water continues to circulate after the engine is shut off, this is why there is no cool down needed. You will not "coke" the turbo. There is no mechanical waste gate to get stuck. Technology has changed throughout the years. I swear, some of you guys sound like enthusiasts did when carburators made the way for fuel injection.
As for the person claiming that the V6 EB has been having all kinds of problems............. please show us where. Short of a few software issues, with very few trucks, please point out all the problems. It is a great engine that has been our for a few years now............ just not in the trucks.
Oh, there has been a software update for MFT, to fix the bugs. Ford had to rewrite what the "experts" got wrong. Vehicles produced this month on, should have the new update. Others with problems can get the fix downloaded. It really is a neat system, when you have a chance to play with it.
Finally, I would love a new Explorer............. If they were to put the EB V6 in it.
Of course, maybe that will happen when/if Lincoln gets one.
