Things i have learned living in the south

A possum is a flat animal that sleeps in the middle of the road.

There are 5,000 types of snakes and 4,998 of them live in the South.

There are 10,000 types of spiders. All 10,000 of them live in the South, plus a couple no one's seen before.

If it grows, it'll stick ya. If it crawls, it'll bite cha.

Onced and Twiced are words.

It is not a shopping cart, it is a buggy!

Jawl-P? means Did y'all go to the bathroom?

People actually grow, eat and like okra.

Fixinto is one word. It means I'm fixing to do that.

There is no such thing as lunch. There is only dinner and then there is supper.

Iced tea is appropriate for all meals and you start drinking it when you're two. We do like a little tea with our sugar. It is referred to as the Wine of the South.

Backwards and forwards means I know everything about you.

The word jeet is actually a phrase meaning 'Did you eat?'

You don't have to wear a watch, because it doesn't matter what time it is, you work until you're done or it's too dark to see.

You don't PUSH buttons, you MASH em.

Ya'll is singular; All ya'll is plural.

You measure distance in minutes.

You switch from heat to A/C in the same day.

All the festivals across the state are named after a fruit, vegetable, grain, insect, or animal.

You know what a DAWG is.

You carry jumper cables in your car - for your OWN car.

You only own five spices: salt, pepper, mustard, Tabasco and ketchup.

The local papers cover national and international news on one page, but require 6 pages for local high school sports and motor sports, and gossip.

You think that the first day of deer season is a national holiday.

You find 100 degrees Fahrenheit a bit warm.

You know what a hissy fit is.

Going to Wal-Mart is a favorite pastime known as goin Wal-Martin' or off to Wally World.

You describe the first cool snap (below 70 degrees) as good beef stew or chili weather.

Fried catfish is the other white meat.

We don't need no dang Driver's Ed. If our mama says we can drive, we can drive!!!

Have you figured out what a Georgia pecan is for?

JackandJanet Aug 23, 2011 01:04 PM

Having lived a great deal of my life in the South, I have to say those are dead-on. Now I'm in the Southwest, except for the poisonous critters and plants that jump out and stick ya, it's all different (and hotter).

Edit: Raoul - they're for "pecaaan pies".

I work in a steel plant in Mississippi. There's never a shortage of southern ways of life and humor to be found in it. I love it.

- When you crush something, it's reffered to as 'smooshed' or 'smushed'
- Okra in any form is awesome (pickled, fried, boiled, etc)
- Men wear coats and ties to football games, for some reason.
- 'Momannem' is actually a word meaning 'Mom and them.'
- It is possible to fit 1 skinny husband, 1 grossly over weight loud obnoxious wife, and 15 kids, all under the age of 16, into a 1977 Buick Electra that has no shocks, leaf springs, or muffler while heading to the local Kentucky Fried Chicken.
- You know that 'runnin as fast as a scalded dawg' is actually a speed.
- A girl that can dance really well is said to 'wiggle better'n'a dawg tryin' ta pass a peach pit.'

I could go on forever...the south is just that...the south :rocker:

The Northern version

You stand a better chance getting into an accident with a bear, moose, or deer than another car on the highway.

Disavay and Datavay are directions.

It is not a shopping cart, it is a speed bump for the snow plow guy or what you find when the snow melts in July!

You have to get through 5 layers of clothing go to the bathroom?

People actually walk out shoot dinner, skin it, prep it, and eat it in under an hour.

You know what a snow blower is and everyone in the family knows how to use it including your wife.

You know that a pastie is a food and is good with ketchup.

Everyone you know drinks coffee all year long.

You know what an apple knocker and flatlander are.

You use words like yous guys and end sentences in Eh in every day conversation!!!

You keep winter gear, shovel, food, water, in your car all year.

Facebook is something that happens when you tick off teacher.

Yous is singular, and yous guys in plural.

You measure distance in how long it takes to get by snowmobile or snow shoes.

You switch from heat to A/C in the same day.

All the county fairs mean it’s time to tune up the snow equipment and make sure the four wheel drive and heat work.

You know what a brat and kraut is.

You drive a four wheel drive truck and consider a snow plow a status symbol.

You only own five spices: salt, pepper, mustard, horse radish and ketchup.

The local papers cover national and international news on one page, but require 6 pages for local hockey, football games and yard sales.

You know that the first day of deer season is a national holiday.

You find 0 degrees Fahrenheit a bit cool.

You know what a balaclava is.

You describe the first cold snap (below 0 degrees) and break out the long underwear.

Ice fishing is a perfectly good winter hobby.

We don't need no dang Driver's Ed. If our dad has had to many beers at deer camp, we can drive!!!

They're good too. Still, the southern version is better!

They still wear Coats and Ties to football games in the South? I remember doing that when I was at Tech. Thought that custom would have been long gone.

Some customs and traditions never die or fade away no matter where you live.

For instance, no one batts an eye when you start seeing snow plows on trucks after the fourth of July up here. And I kid you not we were going camping and we passed 3 or 4 pick ups with plows on them going the other direction and the only thing I said to my wife was, did you bring sweat shirts for everyone.......

Green_98 Aug 23, 2011 02:26 PM

I'm not sure which 'Tech' you were talking about, but when I refer to the 'south' I'm only talking about Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. Coats/ties and women dressed to the 9's are a norm at all football games. It's stupid.

Asphalt has a liquid state.

It was Georgia Tech, back in the late 50s, early 60s. (For those not in the know, M.I.T., a pretty good school, likes to call themselves, "The Georgia Tech of the North"). ;)

If you want a glass of water, put an ice cube in your glass, the humidity will do the rest.
