I would say to be American does not mean one has to belong to a specific religion or a member of an approved a list of religions, or to any religion.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
I could be wrong.....

Now the native religion of the country.......well that in itself could be a poor choice of words.
Think it could have to do with a bunch of Europeans getting on boats, sailing here, and civilizing some heathens, that smoked some funny tobacco and danced to gods in costumes...... Some of them think this is the 4th cycle of the planet, and the axis is slipping off again, so the 5th time is going to be coming around any time now.

Guess that makes quite a few religions not the native religion of the country...

I take yr point but if someone dresses & looks like Ghandi thats probably who they are! When I came to live here I had to learn to drive on the "wrong" side of the road not to mention all the other things that are/were different. If I was not prepared to do that then I should have not come. This guy is in the slammer for being a naughty boy so he abides by our rules or else!! You can only to some degree pick & choose the way u live etc when at home, if u go to the big house u do as yr told!!!

What do you say to the studies that show that the more violent prisons have the highest rate of return criminals? How about states like Montana and Colorado where they take a pro-active aproach, teach them a skill and educate them (if they so choose) and have the lowest rates of repeat offenders?..........<snip>..........
No I have not, and with good reason, I follow the law.

I will reiterate "Some of the TV shows..." is where I am getting my info from, so while it might not be all of the prisons, I can say the ones I have seen, it is not bars and steel beds like the ones of time gone by.
You hold up Montana & Colorado as the what should be done in prisons, but the population, what are they in for ?

Actually AZ has the lowest recidivism rate in the country at ~ 24%. Bet the AZ prisons are not on the list of what you would call rehabilitating places.

Sex crimes and Murder have the lowest repeat offender stats ( 2004 report from Sentencing Guidelines Commission - WA ) where the B&E types have higher rates, drug convictions have the highest same offense revolving door inmates.

Could be those crimes ( that have low repeat offender rates ) have a longer term to them, and the person cannot go out and commit ( get caught ) with another crime ?
Could be MT & CO are stiffer sentencing which leads to less time on the street ?

There are a bunch of reasons that MT & CO could have lower recidivism, could not find any stats ( other than DOJ that has all states averaged together ) that would point to sentence length, crime committed or length of term to know what causes this.
I guess the DOC in MT & CO can hold up what ever they want to for the low rate, until someone pays to have a study done, there is no real way of confirming or denying the rehabilitating programs those states have.

I will say IL is a low sentence rate for criminals due to prison population, so they are kicking people back to the street quicker than other states.
