A lot of those licensed to carry that are on campus will have had military training, I would think, and I see that as a plus.

Besides, the person that is sneaking the gun probably has intentions other than assisting the community.
This is the exact thing I tell people when I start to argue about it with them. They sit and whine about how unsafe it is to have people carry on campus, but they will be the first ones screaming at you to save them when they have a muzzle/barrel in their face.

I would think the same thing. Being that UTA has an ROTC program, I imagine all of the COs, and some of the NCOs would be carrying, which only adds to the odds against the threatening gunman.

I really hope this passes. I would feel a lot better on campus, even if we don't really have a large chance of having something happen on campus to need to use them.

You know Wookie, it might be more favorably received if it was simply employees on campus with CCW rights.
It is also illegal for a CCW to be carrying a loaded weapon anytime they are under the influence of alcohol. I know here in Arkansas to be issued a CCW you have to go through an 8 hour class, show your proficiency with a weapon, have a background check by the FBI, state police and county sheriff. If any of those law enforcement agencies has a problem with you they can deny you and not be required to give an explanation. This process weeds out most of the trouble makers.

I doubt most people with criminal backgrounds or intents are going to voluntarily submit to background checks by the police. This leads us back to square 1 where in theory anyone can walk in with a hidden weapon. The CCW process only allows for trained and verified people to also have one.

Allowing employees to carry would be a good start but how can you justify the 35 year old student not being allowed to carry when the 21 year old grounds keeper, or 23 year old grad assistant can? The Feds and states have determined that 21 is the minimum allowable age to own a pistol. I do not see a reason to deviate from that just because you are in a classroom.

It probably has more to do with being able to own a firearm, since you cannot legally purchase a firearm unless you are at least 21. I think that CCW age requirement just parallels Federal law for ownship.

Good thing everyone is not like you.

Just because you were irresponsible in college, doesn't mean everyone that is in college is irresponsible. You can't deny someone something based solely on your own personal experiences.

Sorry Hog, you missed the subtle sarcasm in my post, easy to do with the typed word.

They tried a bill in Ga a year or so ago (HB 915 I think), but it didn't get passed.

Anyone who thinks this will increase crime is sorely mistaken. Like said before, those who go through the trouble of background checks and paperwork to obtain a firearm permit (GWL in Ga as you can openly carry or conceal) are not the type to pull out a firearm on a whim and start waving it around.

Criminals are far less likely to try to rob students on an "armed" campus rather than an "unarmed" one.

Also, like someone else said, on armed individual could have stopped many more from being killed at Va Tech.

To those of you who carry 'anyway' even though it's illegal to do so in the areas you're carrying... I wish you the best, but I won't be joining you. As much as I'd love to carry at work and I follow the mantra of "concealed is concealed," it's just not worth the risk to my own freedoms.

I don't know how it is in your states, but in New Mexico carrying where prohibited can be charged as a felony. That means that, if you're charged and convicted, no more CCW and no more gun ownership. Have a nice day. The likelihood of that happening is actually very small, even if you're caught, but the consequences are enough to prevent me from even trying it.
