overcharged?

Recently I had repair to my truck and was charged 89.00 for the ecu diagnostic. The diagnostic was unable to detech the problem but I was still charged.

Should I have paid for the diagnostic?
Comments welcomed.

Yes the tech spent time trying to diagnose the problem.

Any dealer when they hook up to the computer is going to charge at least $80. They may be nice and not charge, but the still have to pay the mechanics and in many cases it is the mechanic who decides whether to charge or not.

Next time take it to Advance Auto or Auto Zone and theyll scan it for free.

You can buy a scanner and scan it yourself for less than that. Then you've got it for all the other times you need to scan it..... or just entertain yourself scanning it. Either way, I wouldn't be caught without one.

No, by the terms the dealer posts, that is correct. One would think a diagnoses fee would include the source of the problem.

Sad state when the dealer cannot figure out what is wrong, hands you a bill and says 'no clue'.

What is wrong, you had the no start with the wires that were replaced earlier in the month, is this the same problem or a new one ?

It depends, what do you ask a diagnostic or a code reader service? If you ask for a diagnostic, then you was ripped if you ask for code reader service, they deserve the payment. I don`t know why the people still pay about $100 for a service done for free and faster at autozone.

The diagnostic tools that a dealer or shop use get much much more info than a code reader from Autozone.

I was told wires in the steering column had frayed and shorted this is why they were unable to get a code. I have a superchip flashpaq but it wouldn't connect to the ecu because of the wire problem-flashpaq has a code identifier- I couldn't even change it back to the stock option.

It was weird. When I left work got in the truck turned the key twice and nothing. Radio came on lights came on. Turned the key 3rd or 4th time and it started right up. Got home tried to start multiple times and finally had it towed to dealership.

Total cost with tax $215.00. Not covered under extended warranty? Really. Follow up on that today.

Most shops around here will diagnose the problem and then tell you what is wrong. If you have the work done their then they don't charge you for the diagnostic. If you decline to have the work performed right then and there then they will make you pay for it. If you didn't have them fix the problem then yes you should be charged for the $89.00. If they fixed the frayed wires then I feel that they should have absorbed the diagnostic fee
