Aussie's are a great breed. We had a few as kids, and an elderly neighbor up the road has (had) two.

A sad story...

My neighbor called two weeks ago, on an early Sunday evening, crying and in a panic about her 14.5 year old Aussie. She had just gotten back from walking her two dogs and was brushing them outside, when she went inside to get something.

A buck Mule Deer showed up, and her youngest Aussie walked towards it -- the oldest (and also deaf) followed the youngest, as he always did. The buck attacked (rutting season so their aggressive), and the oldest caught the brunt of it.

We got the dog to my vet who did surgery that night. An antler had penetrated 5-6" from the top of the back into the chest cavity, and the buck probably also stomped on the dog's back. The vet stopped a bleeder, but the poor guy had too much damage. He died the next night.

He was a kind dog, and I'm very sorry for my neighbor. It's hard to lose a dog. I had to have two Rhodesian Ridgeback's put down in 2010, and the emotions are still raw.

I'm sorry for you too, and your loss.
