Cheering at a memorial? WTF?

Anybody see part of the Tucson Memorial? Obama comes up and starts talking about the people who died. He talked about their life and their plans. Instead of being sad, what does the crowd do? They CHEER! Obama didn't even seem phased by it. Am I missing something here? I thought you were supposed to mourn the ones who died, not cheer like it is a football game or high school graduation.

I found it odd too, but then again, I have been to Irish wakes that resembled a tailgate party for an NFL game. To each, their own, I guess.

I changed it right after the first guy introduced the President, seemed like he was brown nosing to me, I really don't care to listen to his (or any politician's) speeches.

I didn't see the memorial; however, I've always had the mindset that a funeral doesn't have to be sad, rather it can be a celebration of life. IMO, laughing and being happy isn't an insult to the dead, rather it is probably how they would want everyone to be. I know that when I pass on, I don't want the ones I leave behind to mourn. I want them to remember the good times and the laughs shared. When my mom died last January, I spoke at her funeral and I did my best to keep my speech lighthearted. I chose to focus on the happy memories and the good times, rather than focus on her struggle with cancer. To each their own, but I don't think a little happiness in the midst of a difficult time ever hurt anyone.

If this meeting does anything good for those who were wounded or the families who lost loved ones, then that is great. Not being close to the ordeal these people went through we all may have quite a different perspective than those directly affected. I say give them their peace, as this thing has already turned into quite the side show.

That being said, tomorrow if anyone tries to make political points from the meeting then they should be slapped silly! Let's keep our eye on the ball and don't let Washington use this to make an assult on any of our rights or freedom.

Very well written!

Yeah, I guess I just thought it was wrong for them to be talking about things people had never had the chance to do and people celebrated when they heard it.

I thought it was odd as well. No telling what was happening prior to the televised portion though. Kind of like coming into a conversation mid-stream.

If you compare this national memorial service to others like Oklahoma City, Sept 11th, Virginia Tech it was very odd. Obama gave a good speech, the crowd on the other hand, was very classless. Did you guys here some of them boo Gov Brewer on her way up to the podium or go crazy when the Native American said his mother was from Mexico? Its a memorial service people have some class! It should have been a somber moment for our nation to reflect, instead it turned into a pep rally.

anyone notice when the guy was praying before Obama came on, and Obama was just blankly staring off into the distance, while Michelle had her head down and eyes closed.

What do you have to do to get your hands on one of those attractive memorial t-shirts, with the catchy memorial slogan?

The sad part is all those families of the victims' that were there think Obama cares about them or their lost loved one...He's probably already planning another vacation.
