Lap Top Suggestions

Well, my current HP is on its last legs. The drivers are starting to be non responsive. Yes I know I could probably reformat it and load all new drivers, but that is a pain. So I'm considering purchasing a new computer instead.

Specs on my computer now.
HP
Vista
1.90GHZ Processor speed
140gb Hard Drive
2GB Ram

Looking for suggestions on new lap tops for $500 and under. I use it for surfing the web, music, videos and uploading my photos. Also will add, it will be used for school work. No gaming. Would like a webcam built in.

Sounds like exactly the type of computer I was looking for earlier this year. I ended up getting a Toshiba Satellite from Best Buy and have been extremely pleased with it so far. The only complaints I have with it is that the speakers sound a little "tinny" and the maximum volume level could be a bit higher. I feel like it was an excellent value for the money, however.....

Good stuff, had seen them but it seems electronics change like I change my underwear. That's why I figured I'd make a new thread. I also must say I think I want 3gb of ram and 2.0ghz + processor as I'm one who likes instant gratification when on the computer.

Seems like Asus may be a very viable option. I've also been rather happy with my HP. Then again i deleted a lot of the preloaded crap and only ran Avast antivirus.

I'll go into more detail of what I want.
-wireless compatability
-built in webcam
-fast"er" speed wise
-cd/dvd-r
-decent size hard drive

Opinions on these?

my brother just got that laptop. I've had just about every kind you can think of (HP, Dell, Toshiba, Alienware) and I must say my next laptop will def be an Asus I was blown away by how nice and responsive it was.

One of my friends just bough an Asus and he is extremeley pleased with the speed and price. He says it outperforms the Sony Vaio (a few years old) that he had been using in everyway, and it was cheap.

if you're not too tech saavy and have a bunch of money to spend, get a macbook or macbook pro.

if you are looking for something to surf the internet on which will last you a couple years, go to best buy, walmart, target, wherever, find the cheapest one with a big enough screen and buy that one. not a whole lot of difference in quality between laptops unless you want to spend $1500+

Dell has outlet stores and auctions. I got a nice workstation-class laptop for $317 shipped.

After adding memory to bring it to 4GB and a 500GB HD, the bill was still under $450. The only thing it doesn't have that you were looking for was a cam.

It is a heavy bastard, though. Not something I'd want to carry around at school.

They have lots of refurbs, unused returns, lease returns, etc., and lots of different models.

I bought a brand new Dell inspiron less than a year ago from best buy. It's been nothing but issues, maybe I got a lemon dunno. My hubby got a mac book pro it was a bit expensive, but half the aggrivation that this Dell has been. Good luck on your search.
