Htc evo 4g?
I've had the EVO since July (right after it came out) and we've had Sprint for probably 8 years. No real major complaints. Service out in the sticks sucked 4 years ago, now it's pretty good. I can get service when AT&T and Verizon phones won't. As for the Droid X vs EVO, my girlfriend's father has the Droid X. It's a bit narrower and taller than the EVO. The EVO's kickstand is very handy. The X has a better battery life. A friend of mine also had the X, it was two weeks old when half of the screen went blank. The service rep that he talked to said that that happens to like one out of every 100 phones. It also seems that the Droid phones are always an update behind the normal Android phones. Not sure why that its. Really, you cannot go wrong with either phone. They are both great phones. Get whatever service is cheaper, and whatever will get you service where you live and travel most. Whatever phone you get, get a case for it and some type of a cover. I have the Zagg kit on mine with a soft rubber cover. I'll say this... If the Zagg wasn't so dang tough, it wouldn't be on my phone, cause the stuff looks like ***. Looks like orange peel.

My husb has the evo, no issues of anykind. We used it while on the road looking for a truck. It was very nice having the internet capabilites the EVO has. We live in Knoxville TN, and there's a lot of Mountains here, he's had no issues with dropping calls, or any service interruptions/interenet loss. I have the HTC hero. It was great until my dog chewed it and I had to get a replacement, that's where the issues started. The refurbished phone was a p.o.s, took a month to get a phone that worked correctly. I just hate that they only give you a refurbished phone. I've never had any issues with Sprint's c/s, been with them 6 years now. Good luck with the phone.
I drove from Los Angeles, CA to Kingsport, TN and had about 20 minutes of no service all the way, and I have Sprint. They sucked at first with their service, but if I yell at them enough then I have no problem, they've always been more than happy to help. You have to watch, though, they'll try to slide one by you if you aren't paying attention.
I have an Evo. I finally broke down and rooted it and flashed the Cyanogen Rom. I hate HTC sense, so the phone is sooooo much better now.
As for service, I have tried T-Mobile and Sprint. Sprint has been the best for me. I use a ton of data and text messages, so to get the same plan with ATT or Verizon, it'd be alot more expensive.

Here is a good site to poke around on if you have a Droid
A lot of developers for Droid phones encourage rooting. Essentially what it does is give you developer control over the phone. I used the "one click" root method while there are a few others. Poke around on some sites like this. It is interesting and fairly simple. Always heed precautions. My phone is a Droid Eris and it is very fast and capable now. No more lag. It is just a tweaked Sense rom (which is basically an operating system in simple terms). You will see that term used all the time. As well as a nandroid backup which you can think of as a system restore point of a last known stable point of your phone. I know I will try out new roms that are totally different than the factory sense interface I have now, but it is an addicting thing that many people are doing. It is more common than you think

Well Hey neighbor!! haha...
I've had the EVO for a few months now and really like it. I've been thru a "TON" of phones and this is by far the best one I've ever owned. I've been with Sprint for a long time and have no problems with service or the customer service they offer. A few friends have the X and it's a pretty good phone as far as they tell me. I just like the bigger screen on the EVO. I would go with whomever has the best service in your area.
Due sometime mid-year.
