Anyone messed with a 6-speed SelectShift Automatic™?

As the title says... How well does it work? Is it as accurate as a standard? Any lag/cons?

Why? I'm not interested, but a friend wants to know before they go out and buy a Ford with one.

I've tested an Edge with that SelectShift and thought it was rather hard upshifting, versus using it to downshift and effectively using engine braking so not to ride brakes causing brake fade.

I don't have any experience with that particular transmission, but transmissions that shift firmer tend to last longer.

Land Rover has had the ZF6spd since 2005/2006 depending on model, and they have been much more reliable then the BMW 5spd auto we previously had.

Basically the trans holds the clutches needed for the gear, and doesnt use the one way sprag that is typically used for coasting

Our transmissions also have a "sport" function which basically holds gears longer keeping the engine revved higher in the power band giving it a sportier feel, and faster throttle response when you are rolling and get into it a little, since the trans doesnt need to down shift
