i just bought a 32" lg lcd tv yesterday, it's my first tv i bought myself for my room, now that I have it hooked up i'm thinking about getting something bigger. I think lcd is better, people told me that plasma's go bad over time.

I think LED also used LCD.....? I am not 100% on that but thought I read it somewhere....anyway, LCD is better in not having glare, Plasma is better for the deep blacks, LED and LCD use less electricity and both way much less then the plasma....I have a 46" Samsung LCD and it has a great picture.....you will need a source for HD. Prices are pretty low! Have fun and get surround sound to make it even better! I love watching the game and you can hear the crowd all around you! LOL GO Eagles! HAHAHA

well i already have hd on a smaller 32 inch flat screen its nice ( get 200 chanels with all hd chanels that time waner has and internet for 120 a month)

main reason for thinking about plasma is larger tvs are cheaper since i want 46 or 50 inch tv

led tv are nice but also more money and i readed that they are just about the same as lcd tv

also bestbuy had a 50in plasma thats 3d with glass for 999 but i also want the best tv i can get for the money just not the best deal

I'll refrain from going into the lengthy technicalities so here's the short answer.
In post production, especially telecine the reference monitors these days are usually plasma. The only reason this is so is because Sony no longer makes CRTs.
A plasma monitor, when calibrated properly, will offer better blacks (although no where as good as a CRT). If you are looking for best picture quality then plasma is the way to go . . . (me, I still have a custom 36" CRT that was made by Thomson and is years old . . . but it still offers better reproduction than any LCD,LED,Plasma out there) Upside of plasma . . . better picture. Downside, loses that better black advantage after about two or so years. Upside of LCD, LED . . . cheaper. Downside not as good blacks, after couple of years doesn't matter. (also uses less electricity) Also note, just because it's plasma doesn't mean it's great. There are cheap and poor performing plasmas out there just as there are poor performing LCDs and LEDs.
Sadly, The Pioneer Elite plasmas are no longer made. They were about the best prosumer plasma monitors out there. Price was around $4,500. These days the best plasmas on a consumer level are the Panasonic Viera line.
BUT . . . if you're only spending around 900 bucks then this is all academic, get what looks best to your eye because in that price range it really doesn't matter.
Some things of note:
Make sure it's 1080p capable. (If you go with a smaller monitor, say 30 or 32 inches, 720p won't make a difference to your eye. Larger monitors - go 1080p. There are still some larger screens that are 720 . . . so just be aware)
Stay away from the 3D crap (unless you're sporting major wood for 3D - but here's a hint . . . you shouldn't)
Samsungs LCD and LEDs are fine in that price range (Some of their TOC monitors are not bad). The Sony XBR line also good but I don't think it's in that price range.
Again - if a great picture is important then you're going to need to do some heavy research and be prepared to drop some bucks. If it isn't all that important and you're not willing to spend major dough, then consider the above mentioned.
Most important . . . LOOK. How does it look to you? (And don't watch the monitors at Best Buy that are being fed the same crappy input that is degraded because it is being split 100 ways by some cheap POS DA. Have them display a blu-ray directly fed into the monitor. If they're not willing to do that, go someplace else. (Best Buy's Magnolia stores may be more helpful if there is one near you).

My parents have a 46" Samsung, my brother bought a 52" Sony. The Sony in my eyes looks clearer, both LCD.

And yes, LED is still an LCD tv, just backlit by a LED which seems to last forever and stay stupidly bright.

Is this gunna be like a family room tv? Plasmas have a wider viewing angle, but have more glare. Dad couldn't decide either between them when he was getting a new TV so im trying to remember all the stuff he told me, ill post more when I think of it all

Also I would wait a little. Maybe try to snag some deals on Black Friday/Cyber Monday.

I have a 50" Panasonic 1080p plasma and the picture is amazing. Had it about three months now. Works well in our wide living room.

My company just purchased a Samsung 42" Plasma for a local group home.

We went with plasma because it offers better picture for regular old cable TV. Also, this is a dissabled persons home, and they like to get a little rough with the TV on occasion, the plasma handled touching and abuse better because of the glass screen, IIRC, where as they showed us the LCD almost blanks out when the screen is tapped hard enough. We also opted for a wall mount due to the knock-over hazard.

It's exciting, the guys should be pretty happy when this baby is installed! Going up from an old tiny tube TV.
