Quote: How is a memorial to a loved one one of the dumbest things you've ever seen?

You must not get out much
I just think they are useless, distracting, sad use of money, degrading, etc.

They let me out of the home a couple of times a month on the bus.

Personal note: My Mother's house is on a sharp curve. A young man lost control of his car and hit a pole on the corner of my Mother's property. The family (or friends) placed flowers there the following day. They soon wilted and my Mother trashed them. More flowers showed up the following week. They soon wilted and she also trashed them. She's 88 years old, I don't want her near that corner, but she did it for ever set of wilted flowers. NONE of the younger people that left the flowers ever stopped to remove them once they were nasty. Finally someone left artificial flowers. My Mother removed them after a week of looking at the tacky display. A couple of months after the accident, a young girl (deceased boy's sister) stopped and asked if her family could place a small statue on the corner of Mother's property in memory of the boy. My Mother refused the request. A few days later a nice gentleman (turns out to be the boy's Father) stops and asks for an explanation of why my Mother refused the request and would she reconsider. He was very polite and is a nice person. She relented and allowed it. So now at the pole near the corner, on the right-of-way, is a small winged cement statue. My Mother sees it daily and remembers the unfortunate young person that died because he made a poor decision to answer his cell phone while trying to negotiate a dangerous section of road. Either my Brother or myself must trim around the statue every time we cut her lawn. I suggest there is a better way to honor the dead...... maybe a cemetery, or a keepsake in your own home, a donation in their name, etc. etc. NOT a shrine on the side of the road overlooking other people's property.
