I'd have no problem with them letting me invest the amount of withholding independantly. The only problem with that scenario is the people whose investments fail will be knocking on Uncle Sam's door for benefits only to be denied. Additionally not everyone is responsible enough to actually invest the amount that their withholding would be and would instead spend it on whatever caught their eye.

And people wonder why I call the "New Deal" by FDR the "Screwed Deal". FDR screwed you and me with governemt socialism. Nikita Khruschev was right in 1959, and continues to be proven right with the current liberal democrats policies.

BTW, I have always lived by a simple formula that I picked up from the book "The Richest Man In Babalon". IIRC, it's called Mathon's formula in the book. I use 70% of my net income for my living expenses, 20% is set aside in an 'emergency fund', and 10% is immediately set aside in personal retirement investments (401k match and IRA). Maybe I am wrong to do this, but I have quite a nice chunk of change sitting in the bank right now in investments, plus a very tidy savings and emergency fund. If I wanted to, I could run down to the local Ford dealer and PAY CASH for a new F-series pickup, and still have money left over in the emergency fund !!!
