Im Thinking about buying a wrecked truck

My next door neighbor has a 94-97 toyota tacoma single cab 4 cylinder 5 speed. They let there grandson drive it for a while and he had a accident in it. Well it turns out the grandson didnt have any insurance on it so the truck is just sitting there.
It has around 100,000 miles and basically needs a new front end like hood, grill, lights, bumper and front fenders and a windshield. Both airbags are out on it. I am thinking about buying it for a commuter vehicle for the wife. What do yall recommend offering for that type of vehicle? I dont have any pics of it but can probaly get some later this evening. I just trying to think if its worth paying him for the truck then having to buy all the new used parts? Let me know what yall think.
The wife had a ford taurus and all i heard was how she wanted a nissan xterra so she got it. Its a pretty nice vehicle but she drive 400 miles a week and we are going threw about 60 bucks for 5 days of driving. Im thinking this little yota will help out with the fuel factor.

I highly doubt it has a 22r engine but if it does, they're near bulletproof. The 4 banger that came after the 22r was a POS and is a sludge monster like the 3.0 V6 that Toyota made. As long as you know it'll be a land slug and not really get great fuel mileage, it's something to keep you outa the bars. Might be worth $100.00 on a good day. They don't bring any money anymore. Toyota's reputation has finally caught up with them. FWIW, make sure to check the frame for rust. Toyota has bought a bunch of these trucks back due to frames rotting completely through.

If you want a high gas mileage truck, look around for a 4 banger Ranger with a stick. It will run forever. A couple grand should find you an older one.

x2

They are all over craigslist and similar websites. I would have gotten one instead of the F250 but I don't like how small they are in side

True - my sister had a standard cab 96, it was like sitting in a sardine can. My nephew had an extended cab 01, that was a LOT better.

I took a trip with a friend of mine from New Orleans to Chicago in a 95 extended cab flareside with a 4 banger stick - it had plenty of get up and go, it surprised me. He even used to tow an enclosed 5x8 with it.

X3. Go with a Ranger. I have a 90 Ranger 4 banger that I totaled and bought back because I loved it and someday I want to buy a frame so I can swap all the parts to a good frame. I bought mine about 3 years ago for $2000. Totally redone from frame up and less than 120,000 miles. I've also been told how many times that the 4 banger 5 speed will last forever.

Same in DFW. I leased a 98 for $99/month. I financed $10100 and it was worth $10,000 when I gave it back with 40K miles. Even the 100K Rangers around here are still between $6-8K for just a regular cab 4cyl.

Several years ago, I rented one - an extended cab with a 4 banger automatic. What a dog! Just for $#!t$ and giggles I ran a 0-60 with it - 16 seconds.

Note carefully - this is a V-6 F-150 owner calling something a dog.......
