I saw an interview with the driver of the Prius in CA. said how they eventually stopped the car was by having the cop in front of him while then turned off the engine and used the emergency brake. If the car wouldn't go into neutral my next thought would be turning the engine off.

When this first started I asked my wife what she would. She said either neutral or turning the car off. Needless to say I was happy with her answer.

one thing also is that some of these toyotas have a push button start, and to avoid turning it off by accident you have to hold the button for a few seconds if it is in drive

All you gotta do is push on the brakes as hard as you can lol. Car and driver did a test with a Camry and with the accelerator to the floor the car only took an extra 16 ft to stop from 70MPH versus closed throttle. Same test took 88 extra feet from 100MPH.

They also tested a Roush Stage 3 and it took an extra 579 feet from 100-0.

The guy that was on CNN today said that he couldn't shift into neutral because he was going 80MPH and trying to control the car....all while talking to 911.....

Maybe I should let someone else drive it.

I'm out in CA right now and it's all over the news here. It happened just down the road on I-8.

I found it hilarious he was sobbing like a baby on the 911 tapes. Any competent person should be able to put the car into neutral or shut the vehicle down wether it uses a key or a button. He said he was afraid the wheels would lock. How can any self-respecting male not try any other means other than jamming on the brakes?

He was interviewd at the Toyota dealer and said he would never drive this particular Prius again but he was getting another Toyota. Dumbass.

My opinion, he should be responsible for whatever monetary charges the CHP spent to help his dumbass.

That driver of the Prius was a total DUMBASS who did it for the attention. It is 100% possible to get a Prius into neutral while driving.

If it had a manual transmission this problem would never exist.

Both videos ASSUME that the fail safes work. In the cars that have had the issues, the fail safes did not work and the cars defaulted to WOT. Should there be a glitch on the programming of certain cars, the driver may not be able to shift out of drive as it is controlled by the same computer that is malfunctioning. But the brakes should still be able to stop the car even though it is at WOT. My personal view is that this is a computer issue, not a mechanical issue. I also think Toyota needs to get off of the "no comment" about the black box that all Toyotas come with. They know what's happening in the failing cars but they are not telling anybody including Congress.

Everybody needs to be "heads up" over this. All cars are becoming more and more computer controlled. How would you like to be driving a car and have the electric steering go south? Ford makes them and so do others. They are putting far too much faith in these electric components that will fail over time. It's yer family- today or tomorrow, you'll end up with one of these if they keep making them. I think it's time folks make the car makers understand that this is not acceptable.
