What is Dubuque, IA like?

I've never been to Iowa and I'm wondering what is Dubuque like. I may have a job offering on the table out there.

I have never actually stopped in Dubuque before, but I have driven through there a few times. Its a nice a river town. I know there is a lot of empty warehouses though along the river in one part....but overall I was impressed. But then again I grew up in a town of 400 people...

Good Luck with the job offer.

Love Dubuque...

As a native Dubuquer (Da-byou-ker) I can tell you this town is really doing well. Obviously with your job offer, it shows we're growing economically. IBM, Hormel Foods, and a number of other employers are doing a brisk business and it's certainly helped Dubuque weather the recession way better than most communities. I'm in real estate and we're doing quite well here - sales totals and sales averages are up from last year, we rank #2 in the US in terms of 12-month home value appreciation.

Here's a cool little video I posted to my blog that asks Why Dubuque? It's really aimed more for the younger crowd, but it does highlight a lot of the features Dubuque has to offer.

PLUS, being a Ford Truck fan, I'm sure you'll be piqued to hear that Big Foot was first introduced to the mass market via the shooing of the film "Take this Job and Shove It, set in a local brewery back in the early 80's.

Of course, I would be remiss not to mention that if you would like a hand in finding either an home or even temporarily an apartment in the Dubuque area, I'd be glad to help out. Good Luck on the possible new job...

I don't have set crime numbers handy, but I'd estimate we're probably lower in rates than average for cities of equal size, I really can't solidly state that as fact, but I've heard a number of folks comment on Dubuque's relative lack of crime.

Unfortunately we've had a couple of high profile deals last year involving fights that led to a murder or two, but I still would says that's atypical of Dubuque. Those incidents seem to be of folks who typically find trouble through their own actions - not folks innocently getting caught up in something not of their own making.

It's hilly.

My sister lives in Dubuque. She likes it there.

Crime rate is "normal" compared to cities in IA of similar size. I believe "most crimes" are under the national average...

I was with the police department in Davenport (Quad Cities) this past summer... We were VERY busy.

The IBM IT center? That just opened up last year.

Good luck on getting the job. I'm sure you will like Dubuque.

I work for an IT company and we have a few clients in Dubuque so I get up there every once in a while for work.

I've been conversing with a recruiter from there. I also have some other new deals on the table here in NYC. I'm willing to relocate, it doesnt bother me. I just want to be able to enjoy my motorcycles on and off road

Stayed there for one night two years ago, with my wife at the Han**** House. An amazing place on the side of a hill. We were there after the rains washed big chunks of the road out. I have always enjoyed my time with the people of Iowa. We stayed there on the way home from spending a week in Panorama (Guthrie Center) at the Prairie View B&B. It was a great stay, and a good place to navigate with a GPS.

My best friend played football at Loras College there. Funny story. On his recruiting trip he noticed that they were the Duhawks. He finally asked "what is a Duhawk?" The coach said, well you know how Iowa are the Hawkeyes, right? We are the Dubuque Hawks....Duhawks.

He liked it there but it was too cold for him. He grew up in New Pt. Richey, FL.

Can get as low as -30 in the winter with windchill. Average temp in the winter is probably around 10-15 degress. I would say an average of around 85 degrees in the summer (June - August).
