Did I read that right? They're pretty much raising the prices so we won't drive as much?

Very disappointing, but not at all surprising. You have to figure that Obama and the liberal tree huggers will have to do something to get us into cars that run on (and like) Jello. Since Europe already has sky high fuel prices (driven almost entirely by taxes), they even have a precident. This is one of the reasons that as much as I love my F-150, I still keep my trusty Scion xB as a daily driver.

This isn't Europe. It will never be Europe, too large a land area in between major cities. Driving is a necessity.

These idiotic politicians must not enjoy their employment.

Unfortunately, even in Europe, we have just as much space between cities as you do and unless you live somewhere like London, which has a decent public transport system, driving is just as much a necessity for us as it is for you.
I drive approx. 750 miles a week for my commute to work. My wife has a 40 mile round trip every day for work.

It's no different for us.

I guess even the obvious isn't clear to the twits in Washington. You'd think they would take a look back at why we ended up in the economic mess we are in now. They want to point at the mortgage market as being the reason it fell apart. Not so. When the price of gas went to $4.00 a gallon, those people that had those mortgages that were already stretched got stretched beyond their incomes. If they tax fuel more to encourage less driving, they'll drive even more folks into bankruptcy. This country has historically run on fuel. Take the fuel away and we are doomed. We have to change things in Washington, no doubt. I can only hope we last long enough before these overpaid morons bring this country down. Like Nakita Kruschev said back in the Cold War days, "We will kill you from within". Looks like he was right.

Gas usage is inelastic. Raising prices will do nothing but hurt us. They know this, they just want more money.

What do you mean? It's going to save the planet!

It will kill the will to succeed in this country, but hey, that's just collateral damage.
