Dog Breed Testing (Anyone?)
Dog Breed Testing (Anyone?)
Anyone ever done anything similar to this?

Unlike a few I've seen while browsing around today, this one actually seems halfway legit seeing how they actually go through veterinarians across the country. It's a swab-based DNA test for canines that you send in and they send back the results to you. I've seen mixed reviews but might be willing to take a chance with this.
I want to do this for two reasons:
1. My dog is Siberian Husky mixed with something else. I want to know what else is mixed in there (so pure curiosity).
2. I want to know if there are any other health issues I need to keep an eye out for.
I actually found a sweet deal on a blood-based DNA test by the same manufacturer. You take it to the vet to do and they send it in for you. From my reading it seems blood-based tests are more accurate than swab-based.
What do you guys think?
I also put her up on this site: http://www.greatmutts.com/dnn/
You put your dog up and people put in votes to what they think the breed mix is. Maybe with a little time I'll get a few opinions. If nothing else could you guys maybe give me thoughts on what you think she is? As of right now she's the third one down on that page (#398).

I've never thought of doing that because my dogs are not mixed and I'm up to date on their breed specific ailments. I can see why you want to do that test to find out possible breed health issues with your dog. You're doing the right thing.
None of my dogs are AKC registered, but I am going to try that route when the time comes in about 15 years. :o
I've always thought of having some registered dachshunds or possibly just a female and breed a few AKC registered litters. Does sound like a lot of work though.
I'm rambling, sorry.

That would be cool to breed them. My boss just picked up a new border collie pup from a breeder. Nice little setup they had.
i understand why you would want to do this. a guy i work with did it. they told him his dog was 25%pit bull 25% something else specific i dont recall what it was. the rest was too much of a mix but for another $300 they could tell him. I hope youhave better luck. not exactly sure what my dog is either i know he is a black lab mix. my vet thinks border collie but he points alot so im not sure.

Then again I'm watching some videos on youtube and lots of newscasts have covered this kind of thing and they all come out pretty well.
