The reason i ask is love Single Cab Rangers, also i have ALWAYS wanted to drive a 5-speed. Im in Highschool and work for gas money and get 12MPG in my F150. The thing is only somethings I can swap in the Ranger, my exhaust intake, lift all have to stay on the F150. So i dont know help!

Hands down stick with the 4.2. I had two Rangers before my F150, the first was a V6 with the Trailhead package (bigger tires, "offroad" kinda look) then when that lease was up I bought a little silver manual Ranger with the 4-banger. That truck could barely climb the pansy "mountains" in NC.
If you put "big" tires on a 2.5L you'll really have a slug on your hands.
If cost is a concern, I'd suggest selling the F150, and get a cheap but reliable beater (like a used corolla or something) until you're at least out of high school. It'd probably be even smarter to wait until you're finished with college, then go out and get the kind of truck you really want (and can now afford since you've finished school).
I suppose you could do that same sort of thing by dumping the 150 for the Ranger, but don't expect too much from it other than becoming everyone's friend since you can help them move (once you head off to school).
- NCSU's $0.02
Edited to add: Just realized you're only 16. Maybe "BlueOval_Boy" would have been a better username...

I like Rangers and all, but I would stick with the F150.
The Ranger will definitely give you better gas mileage (2.5L/5spd combo is awesome), but wont tow very much, has very cramped interior space (compared to the F150), and just wont have as much power...

i think you'll enjoy the 150 more after high school than you will the ranger.
my first truck was a ranger, loved the thing. once i graduated high school i got a good job and went and bought toys. that ranger would not have been as nice as the 150 towing the boat or getting to some 4wheeler spots with the 4 wheeler in the bed.

why do you want to drive a 5 speed so bad? after about the first.......day. it gets really old, to me anyways im sure there will be people yappin about how "cool" it is to drive but ive had 4 trucks, 2 were manuals, one doesnt run, the other is my 2002 f150 (automatic) and unless its a supercar/muscle car its gonna be automatic. i drive for comfort, not coolness

It's not that it's COOL is personal preference me thinks. I have always preferred a manual over a automatic. Its just more fun to drive
(and as comfortable)you just find the gear you want and have at it.

get the 5 speed, most kids these day have no clue on how to drive one...
dig it man....
i do
and i know its preference, well, people around here just want one cuz they think its cool, my first truck given to me by my daddy was a pile of junk 1982 f250 4 speed 351. was a PIECE 2nd truck was a 1998 4.0 ranger 5 speed. manual rangers are just junk used. (i think) ive never driven one that was worth a crap. then i got another ranger that was auto and it wasnt half bad

Keep the truck!! I made the mistake of buyin a car to "save gas" I spent $2400 on the car plus some other things I had to do to it so say $2700 is what I have in it. I could have bought a lot of gas with that $2700. I got the car, drove it for MAYBE a month then drove my truck one time and that was it, the car hasn't moved since. And noone will buy the damn thing so I'm stuck with it. I know you're talkin about gettin a Ranger so it's a little different than a car but trust me, when you're not in the 150 you'll regret it.
01 Ranger was my first truck and I loved it at first. ( course i came out of a chevy corsica into the ranger so nuff said lol) Mine was extended cab and it was still cramped. i couldnt haul my 4 wheeler without it sluggin and it was 4x4. Good trucks if ya cant afford a 150 but since you already got one i would keep it.
I drove 2 manuals (a turbocharged '90 Plymouth Laser and a 2003 Ranger) and I loved them both!. However, there is something to be said for the convenience and simplicity of an automatic. I probably would have preferred a manual in my truck, but the only manual F150 on the lot when I bought my truck was a stripped down, V6, no power anything work truck.
I'd like to see how much of a difference the new 6speed auto makes.
