taking my laptop to the computer shop?

I have a basic gateway laptop (500$ and like 2 years old) that I use for internet and storing music/pictures. Thats all I need it for. I have a lot of "currupt" file messages that pop up, but they dont seem to hinder the performance. The cd drive runs but doesnt read anything. I reinstalled windows a while back and the backup files the computer came with, and thats when the cd drive stopped reading. I'm not really into fixing computers, so figured I would take it to the local computer shop and have them re-do the whole thing and make it like new. I just dont know what to expect to pay for something like that? The computer works fine, I just get irratated when the "currupt" files appear at the bottom. I also think some programs arent working like they should and dont update anymore. I checked the status of the cd drive and it said its working fine, but it doesnt read any discs.

Also, my neighbor messed with it a little bit and mad it where instead of a "c" and "d" drive I only have "c". I dont know what he called it. When I go to the start menu, then computer, the only thing listed is the "c". On my moms computer it lists the c,d, and the e drive. I guess they can sort that all out.

I just dont want to go in there and get stiffed. This is windows vista

Sounds like a driver for the ROM drive is gone, and for Vista, that sends everything into wack! Also the D: drive is usually used as a "backup" drive. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). This is just my diagnoses via personally fidgeting/experience. :o

Geek squad will do a free "inspection" and tell you what's wrong with it, how to fix, and how much.

Hope this helps a tad.

If you take it to a mom and pop place they will probley charge you between

75-120$ to backup and reinstall windows with all the required drivers.

If you get lucky 50-75$

Please dont use Geeksquad, support your local computer company.

Sounds good. As long as its under 100 bucks. I dont really want to mess with it myself, but thanks for the help fordfanatic. So should they be able to backup all my pictures and stuff like that and reinstall them? Or should I do it myself?

i would say back them up yourself just to be safe if you have an external hard drive or a thumb drive that would be best its not that hard pretty much just copy and past since its sounds like u just want your pictures and music?? and any programs you should just be able to reinstall after the computer repair place does their magic
