Lies. Toyota is perfect, God's gift to the automotive world, flawless, blah, blah, blah.

My condolences to the family - I should not have called the driver a bozo without learning more.

What I've been hearing on the news the last day is Toyota is recalling 3.8 million vehicles for faulty floor mats. It sounds like the actual problem is Toyota electronics prevent a driver from controlling the vehicle or turning it off in the event of emergency.

Not sure how removing the floor mats is going to fix that.

So what is the fix. Bring your vehicle in and let us throw away the floor mat.

Radio news still saying that almost 4 million vehicles are being recalled for faulty floor mats.

As a public service, someone needs to post a picture of the killer floor mats. That way if I see one, I can run the other way.

Seriously, does the recall only have the dealer removing the floor mat with no other changes????

Think I'll be keeping my manual tranny car for quite awhile.

Unlike our Ford F-150's, either you don't get the floor mat clips, they are not installed at the factory, or they can break off when driving.

Here are a few comments from our friends at the TundraProblems forum...

"I came across the clips that came in a little plastic baggie to secure the driver's side mat of my 09 Crewmax just tonight while rifling through the console for something else. Having read this I took the 10 seconds to pop them in and it seems like they do the job."

=

"heck i have a rubber mat over my stock mats to protect them....and it slides around from time to time but im smart enough to unjam it if necessary"

=

"Has happend to me 3 or 4 times. 07 tundra with all weather mats and weathertech floorliners. the clip that holds the mats in place comes out and unknowingly the matt shifts and the pedal sticks. Luckily I just grab the matt with my heel and slide it back. It is a scarey feeling when it happens."

=

"Honestly i have had this problem happen to me personally. I keep my mats flipped upside down to keep them from being worn out and brand new for when i decide to sell the truck. But also have the weather mats on top. There not hooked into the hooks. But i knew instantly what the problem was, pulled the mat and obviously solved the problem."

=

"I've already worn 2 holes thru my driver side all weather mat. LoL..I put a mouse pad under the holes to keep my foot from wearing into the carpet until I get some weathertech ones."

=

"I had something similar happen in my Gen 1 Tundra. The back side of the accelerator had a sharp protrusion which eventually pokes a hole in the vinyl on the floor underneath. Press the accelerator down and the accelerator would literally get stuck in this hole. It can be temporarily fixed with a little trimming, but some new floormats would be even better."

=

"Lame. They want us to take the mats out and not replace it with anything ruining the floor??"

For 2008 Nissan went from 1 hook to 2 hooks for the driver side mat on the Frontiers. Wonder if they got scared when they heard about the Tacoma incident a couple years ago.

It seems the ES350, which is what it was (a loaner) has the "start, stop" button and though he pushed the button repeatedly, it wouldn't shut off because you have to push it for three seconds when you're driving to prevent accidental shut-off and he didn't know that. He was a veteran Ca. Highway Patrolman, so he shouldn't have panicked easily.

There is also indication that because the transmission is electrically controlled (no linkage between shifter and trans, only wires through a computer), that it is programmed not to respond to a shift change (even to neutral) at that speed (120) to prevent engine damage if there was accidental lever change. This family died needlessly because of this totally electronic crap! The brakes no longer worked because of heat. You will find others on that site that report uncommanded acceleration, WITHOUT any chance of mat interference. My 1st response was to blame the driver, but after I read those posts, I could see easily how it could happen, under the circumstances, at that point they were along for the ride, with absolutely nothing they could do. I am not convinced at all that it was the mat.

By the way, I spent many years in body work and have personally seen twice, a similar thing happen (1 Mercedes, 1 Audi) in cases that positively did NOT involve a mat or hitting the gas instead of the brake. Faulty electronics.
This is logical.

dbd- I also don't see how they could have told anything about the floor mats. If you see pictures of the car where it landed, that thing is so cremated that they could bury all the family in one casket, you definitely couldn't cremate them a second time. It's ludicrous to me to think you could even tell if it had floor mats in it. I think T/L knew they were in deep doodoo and had to come up with something to blame it on the driver in a hurry. I still don't believe it was mats, and I have heard 1st hand of other uncommanded acceleration in addition to the 2 cases I know of personally. This guy was a 19 yr CHP veteran and I know I don't go into panic mode when something happens where I can't think and I doubt he did either. This took place over several miles.
