New .17 HMR

I currently have a Remmington 597 .17 HMR. However there is a recall on it and they are buying them back. I really like the .17 so I want to get another one. Anyone have any good recommendations on one? I want it to be semi-auto. Nothing to expensive, but a good gun.

I have 1 friend that has a .17HMR it is a german semi auto rifle with a crazy barrel on it... can't remember the name of it though. I just know that savage, winchester, remington, kimber, marlin, and CZ seem to be the most popular small caliber rifle builders. I don't know if any produce a semi auto .17hmr, those are a little more rare.

Marlin and Savage both make a pretty good .17 HMR.

Yeah ive seen those but really only in a bolt action. I like the semi auto of the 597 i have now. But they apparantly have some pretty big problems. I have had mine for 6 years and havnt had a serious problem. But better safe than sorry.

Are they recalling the .22LR version of the 497 as well of just the .17HMR?

DO NOT USE REMINGTON 17 HMR AMMUNITION IN SEMI-AUTOMATIC FIREARMS.

DO NOT USE THE REMINGTON MODEL 597 HMR SEMI-AUTOMATIC RIFLE.

Yeah they dont really say why though. I can understand recalling one or the other. But it must be 2 seperate problems that they have.

I have a remington .17 rifle I've had a long time and love. What is your recall about?

Its for all remington 597 .17 HMR. Something about the semiauto fire mechanism being to powerful and causing it do damage the gun by breaking the bullets in the chamber. Sometimes setting them off. I THINK.

Its a recent recall. But we didnt get anything on it either. My dad went to get some bullets today and on the box it says not for semi auto. Its my gun and he called me and asked if I had ever heard anything on it. I said nope and googled it. Found the information on it. Ive put hundreds of rounds through it without a problem. Using all sorts of ammuntion.

The 597's are actually firing the ammo before the action can close. Remington did not do the recall, so the ammo manufacturers took it upon themselves to warn the public.

I've got a savage with the heavy target (bull) barrel. It's a tack driver.

Yeah decided im just going to keep the gun as a collectors item since they will only give me 200 for it through the recall. . There isnt a semi-auto .17 that is made anymore because of that problem. So it looks like Im gonna either just fire one round at a time out of my .17, or get a bolt action .17 to use. I really like the round and it shoots amazingly.
