You should set up a bait bike. Like have it set up out there but take it almost all the way apart. Set it up to where it falls apart on them.

Good job to the cop who found it!! I know where I live the cops would have just said they would keep an eye out for it and not even worried about it. And if i were you, and you found out the kid who took it, I would have a talk with him and his parents!!!!

Haha yea I've got a couple bags of concrete that I need to use up. I have his old bike which is a fairly nice schwinn of the same size just a bit rusty. I think I'll fill the tubes with some concrete and weld the pedals so they won't spin. Then set it out close to the road. Or use a dog anchors to make it impossible to pick up.

Or maybe cut half the spokes so when he sits on it the bike will colapse.

 

I'm just amazed to hear how the cops actually looked for your kids bike and even followed up with you. That right there is awesome. I guess that is the benefit of living in a small town. When I lived in the city (B'more) you'd be lucky to get a cop to take your statement if someone were to steal your car! Too many bigger fish to fry.
