Gutter help

Howdy, so I have to have new gutters. At least thats what it looks like, im getting some separation from the gutter and the fascia its on water is going all over the place. The way the roof is built I get the run off of two parts on to one gutter. The furthest and highest end of the gutter seems to be taking a pounding from the mass amout of water entering that side at once.

I have a dude coming out to quote me on some new ones but he thinks he might retack up the olds. I kinda want new ones that are bigger and handle more water. My father in law had this same dude do his gutters and he had like 9 or 10 gutters on his place for around 800 that was with commercial downspouts. I have 4 of them 2 large and 2 small with no bends or cuts, is this something I could not handle myself or with help? I mean just how much of a angle do you have to install the gutters on for water to move appropriatly?

has anybody here done them?

If you can get one other person to help you out, I would say go for it and do it yourself. It's not very difficult, just tough to handle\install a long run of gutter all by yourself, especially up high on a ladder. Home Depot or Lowes will have every thing you need to fasten them. If you go aluminum, you will most likely have to purchase a rivet gun and rivets to fasten the ends and down spouts. Make sure you use some out door caulk on the seams so they are water tight.

Also, if you live in a wooded area like I do, I recommend getting some type of gutter helmet or gutter guard. I installed them last year. It's nice to not have to get on the roof and clean the gutters several times in the Fall season. Good luck.

Do you know if there is a certain angle, or offset to put them at? i mean im sure its only like a 1/2 inch offset or so. I would imagine you wouldn't want too much water hitting the spout or too less.

Get a few estimates, the prices for that can be all over the map.
I get on my roof 2-3x a year and blow them out with the leaf blower.
Keeping them clear will go a long way. Make sure you put the leaf blower in your downspouts every once in a while to flush those out as well.

Good luck.

A slope of approximately 1in. for each 16 ft. of gutter is adequate to provide proper drainage. Good drainage is important. So obviously your high end is where the down spout is NOT located. Then measure an inch lower on the end where your down spout IS located.

Nice, at least I got a good starting idea thanks ChrisT.

I don't think my drains are that bad now, but the previous owners took some of that wire stuff and put in them I guess now they have fallen in the gutters. Its a mess up there actually lol I need some new ones.

Oh yeah its very important to get all of the gutter under that last row of shingles right?

yeah, I tried the chicken wire gutter guard at my old house for a while. Chances are if those have fallen in, they are full of crapola. You might be able to clean them out and reuse your gutters to save a few bucks. Painted gutters can look brand spankin' new if they aren't all banged up. Might have to purchase some new spikes and ferules which are used to hold the gutter to the wall of the house.

And yes, your last row of shingles should over hang the gutter by a little bit, at least.

I think in the back part where it has came off of the house, I might have a little bit of rotting on the fascia board behind it but im not certain.

Ahhh, well yea you might have to take that fascia board off too. If you do, and you plan on staying at this place for a while, look into PVC material. I just helped a buddy of mine replace gutters and all about month ago. He went with the PVC stuff which was nice. Don't have to worry about any rotting or maintaining with that stuff.

Have you thought about seamless gutters? I had then put on my house 5 years ago, well worth the money.

North carolina, *note* The dude whom was gonna give me a quote today didn't show up. I called him a few times no answer. From what I hear hes going through a nasty divorce should have told me.

I got another guy coming out in the morning, I got out on a folding chair and tried to hammer the thing back to the fascia with no luck. Seems like those big nails have pulled completely outta the wood, I also hit the wood backing and it is soft but seems solid still. I dunno im going to let this dude look at it and tell me what he things, O and its not the water that has pulled it down its full of slit I guess from the shingles. HA thats what happens when you put off things. I haven't ever even though of the gutters *stupid me* welp I know one thing my in law had over 9 gutters installed all of them custom bends for 800 bucks.

I hope its under 400, all i have is 2 20ft's and 2 10fts, 4 commercial downspouts and thats a wrap.
