motorcycle license

I had went and got my motorcycle permit, but under the permit restrictions, you need to ride with some one else on another bike to be legal..

http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/mcmanual/mclicenses.htm

No body i know rides a motorcycle, and good ol new york, you need to have somebody with a car to follow you as you drive when you are taking the road test. So how do i get me and the bike there legally?

put it on a trailer and just take it there, that way i have the other vehicle there for him to ride in?

How is a person like me supposed to get into a motorcycle with no one else to ride with?

That is sort of a catch 22. I would just go up there. The person in the car is to drive the test administator while you ride. He/she keeps a watch on you while your friend drives.

The test is a piece of cake, though. No worries - but do it before it gets cold!

Take a MSF course and avoid that hassle.

Some states don't take the MSF course instead of the driving portion. I know Georgia won't, but unsure about NY.

OP, something to check on. Maybe it will work out for you. Just in case: MSF = Motorcycle Safety Foundation.

Years ago I went through the same thing. What I *might* have done back then was to drive myself to a testing site that has a test course set up off the road. I might have parked the bike way off on the opposite side of the parking lot. I went into the testing center with all my riding gear (helmet, riding jacket, boots gloves etc.) and aced the written portion. The instructor and I might have then stepped outside for the written test. He could have asked the dreaded question, "How did your bike get here?" A safe answer in my case would have been to say, "My friend drove it up here a while ago and parked it over there." (point to the farthest corner of the parking lot) If you go at lunch time the instructor will more than likely not feel like waiting any longer than he has to and just sign off your paper work. (this is where the gear comes into play, it gives you credibility)

I can not endorse this method but it might have been recommended to me by the police when I asked them the same question you asked us. Around here they understood the problem and as long as they did not see you drive the bike to the testing center will look the other way. The key here is respect and maners. They deal with punks all day. A respectful person is a welcome change.

I strongly recommend the MSF course regardless of how much it costs. It was only $150 when I took it a few years ago. Anyone can read the manual and take the written test. The MSF course teaches you how to react in emergency situations and I have seen people dump their bike in this course. I would rather learn from mistakes in that course than on the open road.

I live and ride in NYC and I can tell you this. Do not ride with a permit b/c it doesnt mean chit. So many people have been getting hurt that they have been cracking down hard on motorist. Pay what ever the price is and take the MSF course. This course will teach you a lot even if you already know how to ride. So many riders have been riding with permits with other license bikers and get pulled over and the cops still take there bike. By the time you pay tickets and towing you could have taken the msf course.

When I took the MSF course it was 25.00 ( yes, less than 1/10th the cost of now ), and worth 300.00 of education ( if you have good instructors ) when I took it.

Thing I have heard ( around Chicago at least ) is the classes fill up 1st day of posting them. You can try the walk in lottery...

Around here is also a private class ( www.ride-chicago.com ) that is better than the MSF course. They have an exam class that is 40.00 ( in addition to taking the class ) where you can take the class at their location, and includes use of a motorcycle and helmet.
Don't know if NY would even be close to this, IL does not have a follow the rider type road test. The road test is done in the lot, based upon the MSF skills.

There is www.ridemss.com in your area, that looks close to the ride-chicago school, with the DMV road test waiver.

Unfortunately the learn curve can be disastrous for your health. You get much more than just learning to ride a motorcycle from the MSF coarse.

I would take it if I were you.
