Computer guys, need help!
Ok. For all you computer gurus out there, I got a question concerning ram memory.
I bought a 2 x 2GB Crucial memory set from Newegg.com. I used Crucial's "Memory Scanner" to figure out how much memory and what memory my Gateway laptop would handle. Well the results were that I can handle 4GB total of ram. SO naturally, I found the set that is "compatible" with my laptop. Ordered it, and it came in today. I put it in my laptop, started it up, and it didn't recognize the increase. So I tried to change the boot memory in the msconfig menu, under the BOOT.INI tab, to 4096 MB, but it didn't take any number higher than 2048 MB.
What I don't get is that under the BIOS at startup, is shows that I have a full 4096 MB of cache memory. So Why won't it recognize more than 2 GB?
I am running Windows XP 32-bit with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor @ 2.4 GHz. I know that a 32-bit OS will not recognize all 4 GB, but more like 3-3.5 GB.
Anyone got any suggestion? I've tried what I know...

I have heard about this before, where windows does not refresh memory amount even though it is recognized by the BIOS.
Depending on what Service Pack you are running this may help. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888137
Pay attention to the /PAE parameter.

Well I'm running SP3, and I have all the updates that Microsoft can find right now. I just don't know why it isn't refreshing the memory.
Is it using it and just not saying so??

I fixed it!
I had to edit the BOOT.INI file. For some reason, it was set to only look for 2047MB, which it found, and only displayed that.
I did what the troubleshoot on Crucial's site said and now it shows I have 3.00 GB.
Thanks for the help guys!
