I need to vent about women vs. mechanics
maybe the guy at the first shop was just an idiot that didn't know what he was talking about. it happens.
had an "exhaust specialist" tell me that each series of flowmaster was made specifically for a make and model of car. i asked him about a 50 series one time and he said it was only for dodge rams.

Hi guys,
I REALLY need to vent on this because it really ticks me off to no end.
I have an 03 F150 that I built myself, painted, installed mods and my own mechanical work. I learned how that truck worked so I WOULDN"T get screwed by some mechanic.
I take care of my boyfriends 01 F250 4x4 diesel. I do not know anything about diesel's or turbos. All I've had to do is oil changes and tires. I heard a small ticking and knew instantly it was an exhaust leak. I took it to the guy who installed the exhaust system. He said it was a cross over pipe leak and absolutely no one did this repair except Ford and they charged $3000-4000!!
I asked the F250/350 guys and they ALL said it was a turbo up pipe gasket leak, no big deal. The more I looked into it, the easier it sounded.
I brought it to a shop in town that builds Pro stock drag races cars for NHRA. He confirmed what I said about the turbo up pipe gasket and it would only be a $200-300 job. OMG!
I'm so pissed at the exhaust guy and pissed off that this #$%@ still happens when a female takes a vehicle in.
I have since bought a thorough book on diesels and turbos so, even if I don't work on the truck, I'll be able to know the mechanics.
As of today, my F150 has not seen the inside of a mechanics shop and it still won't after this. I've been able to fix everyone problem I've run into with my truck.
Thanks for letting me vent. I can't believe how mad this made me.

Kinda funny though, you spouting about how knowledgeable you are, when originally when talking to the Superduty crew you called it a "Crossmember pipe"... Regardless - Why, when your so mechanically inclined, your paying for someone else to replace a piece of exhuast, is beyond me.
Sounds like the guy is just a retard. Don't see what this has to do with you being a woman.

rusted and seized bolts blow to remove... thats not the point either dip!
dlenkewich:Yes I originally called it a 'crossmember' pipe because I didn't know what the heck it was. The F250 guys set me straight. That was the problem...I didn't know a thing about the diesels and because of that some guy tried to take advantage of that. That's when I posted to the site. You guys always give me the best advice of where to go and what to look for. Because of that, I found out about the turbo up pipe. I just won't let this happen again.
As for my day job: I'm actually disabled from nerve damage in my arms and Fibromyalgia. So to keep myself busy, I've become a Volunteer Sheriff, a member of DCS ( which is the Disaster Communication Services), CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and a member of the Sheriff's Fast Action Support Team. I get paged out to work homicides, traffic fatalities, criminal containments and city events. My truck is now used for emergency and disaster response.

Not sure why you keep saying the guy tried to take advanatge of you when he didn't even try to get the work for himself. He said only Ford could do it right? I would venture to guess he just didn't know what he was talking about and would have said the same thing to your boyfriend.
Now if he had it on a rack and was trying to pressure you into authorizing the work then that would be trying to take advantage of you.

Did you ever consider the first guy was just stupid and it had nothing to do with you being a woman? I mean the exhaust guy said only ford could fix it, so it's not like he was going to get the $$$$ for the repair anyways.
It irritates me when people jump to conclusions based on sex, race, etc. And it goes both ways.

edited to add: I should have read page 2 before posting. Oh well.
