Leatherwood Optics
Leatherwood Optics
Its my dads birthday coming up and my mom wants to get him something he will really like. He has been looking for optics for his AR15 (he has every attatchment and acc availiable but no sight yet). He doesnt want something tactical. He mentioned a leatherwood optic. I have really never heard of it. He said it is designed to auto compensate, and he loved the one that he used to use when he was in the army rangers during the post vietnam era. Im sure the technology has gotten much better, but he really would like one. Does anyone have any info on them or any places to purchase them? Sure I can google it, but i dont trust google. Any input? Pricing?
Maybe this is what he is talking about?

I have that same one on my AR-15...flat top Picantinny Rail mount. Haven't had any problems or issues w/it.
I bought mine from Bushmaster ~4 years ago:
http://www.bushmaster.com/products.asp?cat=17 It's currently $459...I think I paid a shade less than $400 for it..

Jim Leatherwood of Brownwood Texas was the guy that developed the CamArt scopes for the military as yer dad would have used in the Viet Nam era. Unfortunately he died about 3 years ago but his partner is still making the product and the company will go on. You'll hear that the Leatherwood optics are made in china. That's correct....just like 80% of the glass in high quality scopes. But like the Leopold, it's assemble here. In the family we have 5 on various forms of AR platforms. The one I like the best has a detachable mount that allows you to take the scope off of the rifle and put it back without having to resight the scope. It works every time. We also have one in transit set up for the M1a style of rifle shooting 7.62x 51 ammo. I can't wait to have that one on the hood of the truck when ol' Wiley steps out of the brush at 500 yds thinkin' he's too far to get hurt. I like the scopes but you also have to remember they are a tactical scope, not a target scope. Groups at 100 yds are in the 3/4" range averagely and hitting a freon bottle bottle at 500 yds is easy from a bench with bags. If that is satisfactory accuracy for him, then he's found his scope. There are several places to buy them. Natchez is one of them. I think they are hard to beat and for what they sell for, they are a bargain. It certainly beats having to pay another grand for an equal scope like a Nightforce.
