After bragging about the dependability of my truck for years now,it finally left me stranded. I went in to the store,and when I came out the thing wouldn't even turn over The alarm kept going off every time I tried to turn the key. I'm not sure what happened but it's at a dealer here in Louisville getting looked at. My guess is the starter went bad. I've had it happen before,one second it's fine,then it draws too much voltage. The sight glass on the batt. is still green. It could also be the alt. too,the gauge on the dash(after it got jumped by AAA) was showing zero amps.
Oh well,I'll let you know what happens later,,,,,98 Wish me luck

Ford used a thin wire lead to the starter silinoid, thats the problem

Well it turned out to be the battery. I've never heard of a battery going bad with no warning whatsoever,have any of you??
I mean it never even slowed down on the cranking end,or showed a drop on the ammeter. So $175 later,I'm back on the road. That's funny,I paid 90 bucks for a battery I could have bought anywhere for less than $60. Oh well ,,,,98

We had one blow up under the hood of our old wagon. We were towing, and had stopped for gas. As soon as the key was turned to start BOOM. My dad was about to get a similarly overpriced, probably old battery they had at the station, but I mentioned the boat battery. Problem solved The charging system was fine, the plates probably shorted inside or something. Then on the way home it blew it's whole exhaust system off. A 400 with open manifolds, meanest sounding Country Squire in the county..

I've seen batteries die in three ways. They slowly poop out. They blow up. They just plain up and quit without warning.

If you have never had a battery blow up, you haven't lived... Had one blow up in my old '87. Damned thing sounded like a bomb went off under the hood. What a mess. I had to wash the entire engine compartment and use a water/baking soda paste where I was afraid to flood with water.

 

All batteries of any kind 90% of the time give no warning of when they will quit. the average life of a car battery is 2-3 yrs max once beyond that it is any ones guess when it will fail. Usually if your battery shows a slow death it is something else wrong like a weak alternator.

Sounds like what happened to my '95 Mustang. It simply refused to turn over. Light worked, the horn worked, so I didn't suspect the battery initially, but I think over the years (5 years on one battery), the battery slowly lost amp. Battery guys told me that every time you crank, the battery loses amp, and eventually, the it won't hold enough to make the engine turn over.

 

Yeah,you hope they'll last forever,but it's impossible,sigh. First one I've ever had go out like that though. Most of the time it's been the long slow drawn out death,hehe,,,,98

Same thing happened to my dad's 97 f-150, we went to pep boys, and when we came out, the truck wouldn't start, and the gauge said the battery was fine, well it turned out that it was the battery, and so we bought a 60 dollar battery, and it worked fine until about a year later, when some punk in a S10 ran a red, and totaled my dad's 97 f-150 lariat.
