Calling All Musicians

I know there are a few peeps here who play.
I was wondering if any of you musicians have a DAW? (Digitial Audio Workstation)
& if so, what are you guys using?

Basically what I'm asking for people who don't know what I mean is:
Which software are you using for your home studio, and are you happy with it?

Things have progressed greatly since the days of the 4-track.
The computer can give anyone a near-professional sounding recording studio in their home for a couple of thousand dollars.

I'm fairly new to this stuff so I'm still building and trying to figure it out; the learning curve is pretty tough.

I'm using Sonar 8 Producer Series with an Edirol FA-101 Firewire Audio Capture interface, and a pair of Mackie HR824 MKII's for studio monitors.

What kind of set-up are you guys using?

do you have any problem with the mackies? im tired of mine because they always have that stupid buzzing feedback if they are plugged into a perfect socket.

Sonar User

I too use Sonar, however my setup is a little different as I employ a mixer with direct outs between the patch bay and the M Audio interface. I use a Delta 1010 right now with the rack mount interface and PCI card.
I switched to Alesis monitors for my near field monitors as they do not cause so much ear fatigue.
I also have the frontier designs alpha track single fader USB control surface which is really handy and easy to use.
Make sure you have some good mics as those are the basis for a good sound.
You may want a noise gate if you are going to record drums.

Don't forget room treatment. Read up on it here. Do as much as this as you can afford.

This thread is required reading, and very interesting. From "day one" to the first tracks... everything in between.

There's enough info there to keep you busy for quite some time. Good Luck, and have fun!

I don't really run DAW but I do some live recording when we are playing off a second board sending 12 channels into Cubase onto a Computer. Works nicely.

I knew there were a few guys here into this, but I didn’t expect this many.

I’ll be honest, I never intended to blow so much of my budget on these Mackie’s, but as soon as I heard them, I couldn’t say no.
I was playing some Korg piano sounds through them this afternoon, and they sounded amazing.
No hiss, no pops, just a nice clean flat sound.

I have read some reviews about some people who had to replace their tweeters under warranty as they were not running at 100%, but they did say Mackie was excellent to deal with when it came to warranty work. These guys cost me $1,200. I told my wife they were $400, and she still blew a gasket, LOL
I guess that’s what you call a noble lie 

You sound like you have a real nice and efficient set-up.
I guess the trick is getting what works best for you, and finding the best gear for your budget.
It's amazing how everything can go from dirt cheap to "the sky's the limit".

I'm a keyboard player, so mostly everything I do will be key-based including drums.
I'll probably add some guitar and vocals later, once I get all my ducks in a row.

Have you heard of this guy?

I just ordered his new book titled: Sonar 8 Power!

I’m hoping this read will help me with my endeavours.

Thanks for the excellent links; I know I’m going to enjoy browsing through them.

I know a few people who are extremely happy with their Cubase set-up.

Anyhoo, thanks for all the replies everyone. If you guys have any songs on songramp or whatever, post a link, I’d love to give a listen. I’ll do the same once I get some tracks finished.
