axle question
OK, here is the problem, I broke the rear end in my truck, I bust some of the teeth off of the ring gear, I haven't yet taken it apart, just diaged it. Now for the problem, I need to know what size it is. The truck is a 1988 F-250, 460, 5 speed manuel, single cab, long box, 4wd. It has 4.10 ratio, 12 bolt cover on the differential, the tag reads
2 V129C
4.10 10 2 8E03
Can anybody give me a size, I keep hearing dana 60, I know its not, it is a ford product. It is either a 10.25" or 10.5". Any help would be appriated.

You diff. should be a 10.25" ford Corp. "sterling" axle. Does it have 12-bolts that mount the rear cover. I recognize you code (book is at work--I am on vacation).
The easy way to identify any Dana rear axle:
10-bolts on the rear cover. Other manufactuers, such as GM also use 10-bolts on rear cover. If you do the rebuild yourself, you may use an aftermarket master brg. kit (which some manufactuers will include brg's., pinion seal, ring gr. bolts & master shim kit in the master brg. kit.
What I am trying to illustriate, the big thick spacers (on the diff. outboard brg's.) are very hard to find. There are about 30 different sizes (thicknesses); without master brg. kit it could be a nightmare trying to order several different shims from Ford Dealer. Also, the 10.25" had a pinion length change in about 1992. A later style 10.25" ring & pinion will work; however, you will have to change the yoke. If your truck has a 4-bolt flange at the rear diff. You cannot change from early to late.
US gear makes a nice gearset for the "early style 10.25" Ford axle. To my knowledge, no other Co., except FOMOCO makes the late style ring & pinion (which has the taller pinion). Good luck, Gearman

Wow, that was great, I didn't know most of that. I did some more research on it, and found that it is the 10.25, I ordered the ring and pinion today, it came with the shim kit, cruch sleeve, pinion seal, bolts, free shipping, and a lifetime warrenty. Not bad for $219!! Thanks for the help.
