OK Safety Inspection? Not anymore...
Let's see now.. Here in Mass we have to pay about $30 annually for a biannual emissions inspection and the annual safety inspection. And guess what? There is still plenty of POS driving our potholed streets.
Eliminate the inspections, no way Jose! They would not be able to make the payments on them $30,000 computors they were forced to buy if they wanted to continue with thier lucrative inspection business!

I can just see neighboring states banning vehicles from Oklahoma.
Why did they eliminate safety inspections? Without these annual inspections, many car owners would never know that they're driving unsafe vehicles!

Once upon a time, we did have emmissions tests here in the Twin Cities. It was five bucks extra for all who lived in the Seven County metro area. In any case, they soon found that every year, they failed almost no cars that were under five years old. So, they changed the law to read only cars five years old or older. Pretty soon, they figured out we met our air quality goals and emmission testing was doing little to nothing to promote clean air. The emmissions tests were scrapped after even the Minnesota Pollution control agency said they weren,t accomplishing anything.
So never say that emissions tests will die... they did here, with the blessing of the pollution control agency!
There would be plenty of us banned from the roads if an inspection were required - I'm willing to bet there are a lot of states that don't require them, and have no plans to start. Just my two cents...

They do inspections differently in OK. Basically they just check to see if all the signal/brake/head/tail lights work. I'm almost 22 and have had my license since I was 16. I have only once had to go through all the steps of inspection once and I took 3-4 cars to get inspected every year.
The reason they are doing away w/ the inspection fee is for consumer convienence. There has been no studies to show that inspection stickers reduce the number of accidents on OK roads. (need to inspect idiots, not their cars)
yes, there are alot of nasty cars in OK. white trash seem to buy the smallest cars w/ the most rust and dents and pack their 8 kids into it. However not everybody gets their cars inspected or get tags. And there are tons running around here w/ no insurance.
the actual cause of accidents is bad drivers, not bad cars.

If people were responsible and maintained their vehicles, we wouldn't need inspections. This is not remotely close to actuality. Try getting a favorable opinion about removal from a family member who's loved one was killed by a poorly maintained vehicle with bald tires in the rain.
I recall the reason Massachusetts implemented the emission testing was they were about to lose federal monies. Go figure! It probably had to do with the "Big Dig", the largest ever public works program in the country. It is an effort to submerge the "distressway" beneath the streets of Boston. Started out as a billion dollar project. Now estimated at $14 billion and each of YOU is paying for it! But it is providing jobs for some lucky people.

I think it's very important to make sure cars and trucks don't pollute, even though they create only a small portion of the total pollution. Even though the percentage is low, in big cities, the percentage is HUGE and it directly impacts people on the streets.

Don't forget... we never had "real" emissions inspections. All they check is tread-depth, horn, lights, turn-signals and wipers.
As for the "emissions" areas & their inspections, only once have I ever had anyone say anything about the "emissions" of a truck I brought in. They didn't like my free airbox mod on the Expedition, so they refused to "inspect" it. They didn't have a problem with my TRUE dual exhaust! Anyway, I went to another inspection station & got the sticker. I've had my license for 18 years and I live in Tulsa county. Our "safety" inspections were a joke.

Safety Inspection? What the heck is that? It would seem that a person with a driver’s license would have enough common sense to check over their vehicle. Is that one of those regulations to prevent you from hurting yourself. This is just my opinion on keeping the environment clean and pollution free, we would probably have to really depopulate this planet.
Glad to hear about the change in OK law. I was working in Oklahoma on a business assignment for awhile. Thought it would be a good idea to have my vehicle inspected while I was in OK. I left my F150 at a local OKC Ford dealership, but when I came back to pick up my vehicle they said they could not inspect it as it had out-of-state plates. The service manager said the changes in the inspection law at that time were due to "all the Texans coming to OK to have their cars inspected". Heck, I would think that OK would be glad to get money away from their neighbors to the South.
More about Mass. inspections: My son just became licensed to drive last week. I gave him a 95' Taurus which was in exceptional condition. He went to the station for the emission (bi-annually) and safety inspection. Failed right away due to a leaky exhaust and burned out sidemarker. Now, $200 poorer, he has a new exhaust system and the car passed inspection. That same place flunked me a few years back for a burned out side marker! And if I'm not mistaken, the inspector, an independent repair garage, gets all of the fee, about $29.
