Unhappy Locking Gas Cap

A recent refinery fire in down state Illinois has people predicting gas prices will hit $4.00 for regular unleaded here this summer. If I'm going to have over $100 in a full tank I want to lock it up! Anybody know if Ford sells locking caps? I bet there will be a run on them soon.

Got my own answer. Locking caps are $33 from Ford. I'm ordering one tonight.

Little story for ya:
My gas cap broke! Me wanting to keep my Truck "as FORD as possible" calls the Ford parts dept. at my favorite Ford dealer and actually asked (it was worth a try) if it was covered under the bunper to bumper warrenty. It wasn't, so I paid $16 bucks for an official FORD gas cap.
I opened the box and it was a generic gas cap! No ford symbol or "open slowly . . ." or nothing. Just a plain stupid gas cap.
Do yourself a flavor and get a cheapo one from anywhwere, it will be the same one you would have paid twice as much for from Ford.

Exclamation

I have a locking Ford gas cap and I don't think it cost me $33. I also purchased it from the dealer.

It does have the Ford Oval on it.

Why buy a locking gas cap? Try sticking a siphon tube down the filler neck and get some gas out. You can't. There is an obstruction at the bottom of the neck where it meets the tank. It's factory installed on all vehicles I believe since the '80's. Of course, a locking cap will help to prevent someone from adding anything to your tank, sugar etc.

My 89 F-150 4X4 came from the factory with a locking gas cap. On the way to work one morning in sleet and freezing rain I noticed the tank was near empty. When I stopped to fill up, the cap had moisture in it and was frozen tight. I managed to break the key off in the lock, and missed a half day of work from having to drive to the dealer so they could remove and replace the cap with a NON-Locking one. I will never again have a locking gas cap.

Just for everybodies info...

Acording to Ford there are 3 different locking gas caps for 2000 F150s depending on build date (mine is 6-1-00). Up to 1-1-00 you use the '99 cap. This is the newest one Pep Boys lists. It goes for $23 but they don't have any in stock. The second is for 1-1-00 to 3-1-00. The third is for after 3-1-00 (mine) and is $32.XX from Ford and is in stock at the dealer.

The locking gas cap that you can purchase from Ford is a Stant gas cap. The nice option is that it has a Ford logo on a shiney piece of metal that slides over the key hole. A locking gas cap is a pain in the ***, I don't know why they didn't put a locking cover with a release in the cab from factory, saves the hassle of frozen up locks, broken keys, and having the gas jockey scratch the side of your truck trying to get the cap off! (Personal experience!) Well, at least know one will steal my $50.00 worth of gas, now! (Another personal experience!)

Thieves got mine once too... about 10 gallons back in December. Needless to say, I now have a locking cap. A bit of oil is all it takes to keep the lock lubed.

There is no anti-siphon protection on our tanks. There are a couple of bends to get around, but it can be done quite easily.

I worked production in the Dearborn Engine and Fuel Tank Plant for 2 1/2 years... the F-150s doesn't, the Escorts and Mark VIIIs don't, the Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, and Town Car don't, and the Econoline van does. (Not positive about the Explorers... Don't recall for sure, but I believe they do)

Another little story comes to mind.
I was at a gas station when I saw a guy come in and ask the attendant for some "lock de-icer"
I knew it wouldn't work, because I have to open locks all winter long and that stuff, if you get lucky may open it, but it adds moisture which then refreezes.
"LockEase" with graphite is as good as it gets and once treated, locks will open in the dead of a icy winter about 90% of the time. I carry a propane torch for the other 10%.
Well, I watched that guy first squirting that stuff in and then pouring different stuff all over the side of his truck hoping to unfreeze that gas cap, as I was leaving.
Then it hit me, I can help him.
So I come back, park behind him and say "Do you have leather gloves?" he looks at me puzzled and says "yeah" so I said "Good, put them on and bring me your key"
He watched as I torched his key and then handed it back to him.
Another grateful stranger.
Who was that girl in that awsome blue Ford truck?
