Cool Topeka-Kansas City BBQ

I'm going to be in Topeka April 17-19. Where in the Topeka-Kansas City area can I get some REAL GOOD BBQ? I'm going to Kansas hungry, I need advice!

I love ribs and this is a great opportunity to try some from Kansas. I can't wait.

Also, are there any local specialties I should know about?

Thanks,

In KC, the word is "Gates". Probably 6 or 7 of them around town, but Gates BBQ is good stuff. It's been a couple years since I was in Topeka, but there was a place over near Menninger Institute with a drive through window and inside seating...."All American", maybe?

Aurthur Bryants is good BBQ also, several Presidents have eaten there, etc... Only thing is that its in a part of town you might not want to get lost in.. At least the presidents have secret service with them..

Gates the word in K.C? Maybe 10 years ago. When in K.C. eat anywhere but Gates. That place has ran it's course. When the health Dept. close's you down because the rats won't even eat your food, your in trouble. Bryant's is good along with others.

Talking

hey that reminded me. Go into Manhattan to a place called Rusty's Last Chance Saloon. You'll get your fill of good ribs there, and it's not far from Topeka.

Cool

Thanks for all of the information.

Unfortunately, I am working in Topeka during the day and don't have time to leave town for lunch.

However, it should be worth the drive to Kansas City every evening.

My favorite BBQ in Topeka is Boss Hawgs.

If you want to make the trip to Lawrence (between Topeka and KC) then Buffalo Bob's Smokehouse is supposed to be good.

Thanks for all of the input.

Here is a letter I sent to the following website. They had some terrific information and it helped me find a very good restaurant.

http://www.johnco.cc.ks.us/~rmoehrin/gas.htm

I know my letter is way too long, but I had a good time eating my way through Kansas City!

Dear Rick,

Thanks for all of the information on your terrific site.

I just returned from a short business trip to Topeka. I used the trip as an opportunity to sample the world famous Kansas City BBQ. I discovered the G.A.S. site on the Internet while searching for restaurant suggestions

Based on what I read on the site, I visited the following 3 restaurants.

LC’s
Fiorella's Jack Stack - (Martin City)
The Filling Station

My first impression of LC’s was it was the employee’s were not very friendly and it has the slipperiest floors I have ever walked on. The ribs were just OK. I had a small end rack. I will say that I am not a fan of ribs buried under sauce, so my opinion is a little tainted. But, I’ve had better, and did have better. The best part of the meal was sitting next the Chief’s coaching staff as they talked about different players. I asked **** Vermeil about Jack Stack’s. (I overheard him mention he had recently eaten there.) He suggested I try it. By the way, the bored employee’s and greasy floor did not influence my meal. They just add character to the place.

My next stop was at Fiorella's Jack Stack - (Martin City). Nice restaurant, good ribs, good beans, good portions, good service. This place is definitely a keeper and I would not hesitate to eat there again or recommend it to friends. Their regular sauce is very good, but the hot sauce lacked flavor. The beef ribs were a waste, but almost all beef ribs are a waste in restaurants. I won’t hold them against them. I’m not much of a bean eater, but I ate almost all of them. In fact, I would have, except I was on my way to The Filling Station.

Because I had already eaten at Fiorella’s, I just went to The Filling Station for a snack to eat when I got back to my hotel in Topeka. I ordered burnt ends. I told them I did not want a side because I was just going to eat the burnt ends in my hotel room. This brought up the fact I was from California and that I had heard about The Filling Station from your website. They said one of you guys had been in yesterday (4/17?) and that your site really rated the beans highly. Because of the very good beans I had at Fiorella’s, I said OK and accepted the beans as a side. When they brought me my bag, they said they had thrown in a couple of ribs for me to try. Nice touch.

I stopped at a mall to look for a gift for my son, and had a Dairy Queen Blizzard. By the time I got back to Topeka, I was still full and it was after 10, so I asked the restaurant to refrigerate the BBQ for me. I then carried the BBQ for about 8 hours on the planes to Sacramento. I then shared it with my wife and son on Friday night. It was still excellent. It was my kind of BBQ. Burnt ends are not available here in California, so I did not know what to expect. I now know, they are another taste treat. I do need to learn how to make them. The ribs were tender and juicy and the sauce was a perfect complement. If fact, I saved the leftover sauce and I’m going to use it tonight when I make my own ribs. They were right about their beans; we ate them all with gusto. The Filling Station was worth the drive and the hassle of hauling a bag of BBQ on a plane. I really want to taste their stuff when it is fresh.

If you are ever in the Sacramento area, try Back Forty Texas BBQ in Shingle Springs and Texas West BBQ on Fulton Avenue in Sacramento. Despite having Texas in there names, they make the best BBQ in Sacramento.

Thanks again for your site, it was invaluable.

BOB

98...You should have gone to Rendeaveaux(spelling)..it is famous for BBQ. When ever I make the 3 hour jump to Memphis, we always eat there. Corky's is a chain, got them in Brentwood. Good resteraunt none the less. Just not like The Rendeaveaux(spelling)
