Post the tundra test drive !!!

a friend was buying a 4 runner, so while i was there i had to test drive the tundra V8. it had good acceleration and drove nice. the major problem with the tundra is, it drove more like a ranger or an S-10. its definitly not like a Z71 or f150. if f150 is considered a 1/2 ton, then the tundra should be considered 1/3 ton. it is a nice 1/3 ton mini-truck though.

I never test drove one, but it also looks like it should be in the same class as a ranger, or a s10 or a dakota. I have a question about the tundras- is there just 1 type of them (ex. 150...1500), or are there heavier duty ones too like a 250 or a 350?

They are all 1/2 ton trucks. My brother traded a 97 F-150 for one last year and loves it. He has about 22,000 miles on it with zero problems, but then it is a Toyota. I've driven it a few times (he lives on the east coast) and thought it drove and rode good. All in all, a nice truck. The main problem I have with it is the size. It's smaller than the other full size trucks but bigger than a Dakota. It works fine for him (6' 200lbs) but I'm cramped in it (6'4" 250lbs).

Thumbs down

I test drove the tundra about June or july of last year. It was the 4.7 liter extended cab. I did not like the dash or the interior, looked cheap to me. The box in the back was no ware as deep as our f150. 0 to 60 times were very good, but the brakes were no better to worse than our f150. The dealership gave me a real nice brochure comparing the toyota to the other makes. I had a s15 years ago. I would compare the s15 to the toyota, Not to a f150. I am glad that I bought a f150

mercon v, k&n filter
load lok liner. the best liner in my opinion.
17 inch tires saw blade rims goodyear at/s
vent visors
nerf bars black
door crack both doors
manik grill guard. black.
clear rear corner.

future mods. 2 or 3 inch lift. clear front corners.

What a time for this topic: I just test-drove INTO a Tundra. It didn't hold up to the test.
Durned jerk fool pulled out in front of me from a side street and I caught his tail end with my ABS screaming truck.
Fish tailed him around and then he got whacked by another car.
Just bought it yesterday...and paid for it today.

Damage to my truck...yea: slight - the front license plate holder got bent. Looks like a V now. I'll take it off and bend it back, but right now it's my warrior badge.

His damage (I shoulda had my dig. camera): L/Rear 1/4 panel smashed, L/Rear light assembly (all me baby!)
Damage I can't claim - drivers side door, driver side bed, drivers side cab frame(+back glass shattered), drivers side frame. Even though he never got touched in the front, he was leaking radiator fluid. Weird. He left as a Totally Towota Tundra.

Oh, the car that wacked him after I did: '96 Buick LeSabre - 61year old man...minor damage to front end, just enough to set off the airbags ... and he was able to drive away from the scene.

...no injuries ... 'cept the Tundra pride.

Tundra driver got 2 tickets (stop sign and failure to yield) and went to jail for a suspended license. He had a very bad day!

Cool

My brother in law bought a Tundra about a month ago. He has a Tahoe that has had tons of nit picky problems yet he almost bought a Silverado, then he really wanted a Supercrew but couldn't go for the price. He loves Toy's (he he) and he got a deal he couldn't refuse (female salesperson really screwed up on the quote, but at least the dealership honored it). I test drove it and feel the same way most of you do. Definitely too small even with the extended cab, good acceleration, moderate to poor braking, definitely a cheap looking and not ergonomically friendly interior, extremely shallow bed. It should suit his needs as he is going to use it for a daily commuter and maybe light hauling. The longevity is probably going to be good since it's a TOYota, but it is only slightly larger than a Dakota. If any of you get a chance, take a look at the engine compartment and look at all of the space under the hood. I was so surprised!

What gets me about the Tundra is how tiny the rear end (differential and axle) is.

I actually think thats how they claim more ground clearance than other real full size trucks.
