Question FF's, EMT's, and anyone else... opinion?

Ok, here's the deal...

The supply officer of my AMB. squad has a siren box that we have extra and wants to know if I want it. I was thinking, it would be a good way to get traffic out of my way when responding to calls in my truck but on the other hand, it does seem a bit overboard. What do you guys think??? Not looking to get flamed just want some honest opinions.

Not sure if you can or not. When checking the NJ statutes:

39:3-54.15. Warning lights, sirens
An active chief or first assistant chief of a volunteer fire company recognized by and rendering service in any municipality may display on a motor vehicle owned by him and registered in his name a red emergency warning light or lights, a siren, or both, as prescribed in this act. The size and type of lights and siren, and the location of their controls, shall be determined by the Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles.
...then found this...

39:3-69. Horns and audible warning devices
<snip> No vehicle shall be equipped with nor shall any person use upon a vehicle any siren, whistle or bell except as otherwise permitted in this section. It is permissible but not required that any vehicle be equipped with a theft alarm signal device which is so arranged that it cannot be used by the driver as an ordinary warning signal. Any emergency vehicle authorized by the commissioner may be equipped with a siren, whistle, or bell capable of emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not less than 500 feet and of a type approved by the commissioner, but such siren, whistle or bell shall not be used except when such vehicle is operated in response to an emergency call or in the immediate pursuit of an actual or suspected violator of the law, in which said latter events the driver of such vehicle shall sound said siren, whistle or bell when necessary to warn pedestrians and other drivers of the approach thereof.
I guess if you get permission, you should be OK. We've got many volunteer FD/EMT guys that have fully decked their trucks for response.

Cool

I say mount it. You could tell the cops that you use it as a PA. I would suggest mounting it behind the bumper, thats where I'm going to mount my Airhorn. If you need any help let me know.

Perhaps you haven't heard the Lawers new phrase "Zone of influance" what it means is if you scare some poor old lady with you siren, and she has an accident, you become liable. I know it sounds like BS, but its happening. I've been a career Firefighter/EMT for 12 years and a volley 5 years before that, my opinion, don't do it!
