New to F150 Online
I am new to the site, I actually have been participating for a couple of weeks but thought since everyone else was doing it, I should probably be polite and announce myself.
I bought a 98' Silver on gray F150 STX std. Cab, 17" wheels, with only a modified air filter cone. I have been wanting a truck for sometime and saw Christpher Titus' Customized Lightening on his show and started dreamin'. So, I traded my 96' White Mustang GT, 17" wheels(very fast) for my truck. Only regrets are no 5 speed and no power. I hope to remedy the power issue.
If anyone has suggestion on how I can boost performance on a budget let me know.
Thanks
Jwrape

jwrape....Welcome to F150online.com and congratulations on the truck purchase. Since your already have a modified intake system, I suggest replacement of the factory muffler with an aftermarket unit and the purchase of a Superchip. There is plenty of research material online currently and the Search function will provide tons of additional information in the archives, enjoy!

Welcome to the boards Jwrape. "how I can boost performance on a budget" isn't that a contradiction in terms? Have fun trying though.
Question: "How fast do you wanna go?"
Answer: "How much do you wanna spend?"

Hi jwrape,
Yes indeed, welcome to F-150 Online!
Just so you'll know for future reference, this particular section of the message boards is specifically for the Webmaster of F-150 Online to make announcements to the rest of us here in the F-150 Online community.
To answer your question, there actually are ways to improve performance on a budget, though it is always going to be true that "speed costs, how fast do you want to go?". Or another one is "you can go as fast as you want to spend", and there are plenty of other cute sayings along those lines, most of which you've probably already heard.
The top 3 best bang-for-the-buck mods on these F-150's are:
1.) Optimize the powertrain programming with the Superchip, this will get you the biggest improvement in performance for the least amount of money. The maximum rated gains for the 4.6 F-150 are 26 hp & 40 lbs./ft., and for the 5.4 it's 28 hp. & 46 lbs./ft., and we make them for the 4.2 V-6 as well. In round numbers, think of the Superchip as a 10%-12% power gainer on any of those engines in the F-150. If you have an automatic transmission, it will also clean up those shift characteristics quite a bit too. This product is available directly from us here at Performance Products, so please feel free to get in touch with us for all the details, etc., our contact info is just below.
2.) Next is to reduce restriction in the air intake tract, using one of the airbox elimination kits. They're worth 12 hp on the 4.6 and 14 horsepower on the 5.4 motor, and are available directly from the F-150 Online Store, which you can access by clicking on the link on the left side of your screen here that says "Online Store".
3.) Next is to reduce restriction on the exhaust side, using a good cat-back aftermarket exhaust system. We suggest using the Gibson Swept-Side model specifically, as it doesn't drop low-rpm torque on part-throttle like a lot of systems can. This too is available from the F-150 Online Store, or you can call them directly at 916-361-2510.
While I have listed these mods in order of best bang-for-the-buck, you can actually do these mods in any order you like. Some like to do it in order of bang-for-the-buck, and some have to have that V-8 rumbling first, etc., so you can do this any way you like.
If you'd like to go over this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call, we're happy to help.
Congratulations on your F-150, & best of luck whatever you decide!
