Yes, CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulations have been in place for a long time. The fuel economy average gets bumped up every so often. Obama is just speeding up the time table.

Basically, they average the mpg for the cars you actually sell, not by how many models you have. For example, if your company sells only two models, one that gets 20 mpg and one that gets 40 mpg, your CAFE is not 30 mpg. It is based on the sales - so if you sell twice as many 20 mpg cars as 40 mpg cars, your CAFE is 26.67.

So selling bigger, poor mpg cars weighs down the corporate average.

Apparently, there is a very complicated formula for calculating the fines/taxes if your company falls short. So luxury and performance car makers just pass on the cost of the fuel consumption tax/fines to the consumer.

What he said. It's avg across all the models made. Just like right now it's like 25 or something. They can still have some models getting below 20 assuming they have enough making 35+ to make up for them.

maybe they'll put a beefed up verison of the eco boost maybe a twin turbo 5.4? or if ford ever gets the ball rolling on the 4.4L turbo diesels that i can see making 25+MPG pretty easy. in gas mileage diesel owns gas. my buddy has an 02 excurtion with a 7.3 it gets 20mpg....and there not excatly easy on it black smoke everywere and they tow alot. still 19.8 mpg so if a 9,000lbs truck can get 20. a 6,000lbs should be able to get more.

I bet there will be exceptions for the 1 ton rated pick up trucks, and the general purpose joe public truck will be lighter duty to meet the haul the dog and the tools to work needs of these people.

I think that you will now see a lot more of the European models being built and sold in the US. There's not much in the line up that does less than 35mpg to be honest. These are all great cars and generally much newer and nicer platforms that Ford USA have been ripping you off with for years.
All of these Euro models are up there in quality and reliability with anything turned out by the Japanese or Koreans.

For the city types - Ford Ka

For the Fast & Furious types - Ford Focus

For the Soccer Moms - Ford Kuga

For normal people - Ford Mondeo

With the emissions and MGP they are now estimating that the new standards are going to raise car price by at least $1300 per vehicle. That's just great I personally think cars and trucks are overpriced currently so let's make them more expensive....just what the automakers need

Umm... most people can easily make a regular cab short box F150 get 40 mpg using a simple diesel engine.

Why? It's way more efficient.

In fact, I just read an article in the 8 lug diesel magazine last week about a dude who got a 24 Valve Cummins TD and replaced his HEMI for it, and is now getting 44 mpg highway. Basically he went from gas guzzling 14 mpg to a whopping 44 mpg for less than $5,000. Plus it will last forever.
