taxes unconstitutional?
Has anyone heard of/know of anyone who's
used Irwin Schiff's "zero" income return
technique? Just interested in hearing
other's opinions. (If you have no idea of what I'm talking about, check out http://www.paynoincometax.com/).
Heard about it on the radio this morning, would be pretty nifty if it works

I've been reading about this tax stuff on another board. It's kinda like the argument on whether or not we really landed a man on the moon. Who knows?
I must admit, they anti-tax faction seems to have a strong foothold in fact. Makes me want to either withhold my tax return or burn down the locla IRS building.

I just watched 60 minutes, 20/20 or one of those programs a couple weeks ago and they were talking with people who also believed income tax was unconstitutional. They also interviewed the head of the IRS. At the end of the story they said that the only way this was going to be resolved was in the courts, and it hadn't been resolved yet. I'd love not to have had to pay my $40k+ in taxes last year but I'm not about to risk jail to be somebodies guinea pig.
Mailed my tax return this morning.

Quickdraw, Yes that is sad considering the jobs you and your wife have. I have actually always wanted to be a cop but never looked into it seriously until a couple weeks ago. I found out that I missed the deadline for the civil service exam and I'll be too old (32) for the next exam. As much as I make, my job isn't fulfilling. My wife was a teacher at a small Catholic high school for several years and was only making $14k a year teaching 8 classes in 7 periods. Truly sad. She's now an executive admin.
Thank you and your wife for your service.

Income tax in its current form is unconstitutional. In fact it was only supposed to be temporary, not permanent. The government got hooked on all those $$'s coming in and so here we are today. Usually it's either pay or go to jail. So I do like most people and pay. However, it has been proven in a court of law that it is unconstitutional and won. Good luck.
RipF350,
Man, I got to ask this one, how much does someone need to make in a year that they have to pay 40+K in taxes? No exact amount needed, just ball park it to the nearest Million! At that salary, in your early 30's, why even have your wife work?
Unlike most in South Carolina, I do make just enough not to live in a mobile home, not that it's a bad thing to live in a mobile home.

consider any donations a gift to charity or something and put it on your itemized deductions for 2001. this is my wife's last year teaching, so we're going back to just one income. good thing we're living in a house that's paid for while the old folks (grandparents) are out of the country for the next year and a half. thanks!

We ended up paying $43k in state and federal taxes last year. I'm in the 31% tax bracket so that will give you a ballpark. We have no dependants unless you count the cat and the accountant said we couldn't claim him until we get him a social security number. The only things that helped us out were charitable contributions, excise taxes and interest paid on the mortgage. As far as my wife working, we don't have kids and she wants to work so we can continue to buy our toys and go camping every weekend from May to October. We figured that her gross salary last year paid our tax bill. DISGUSTING! What's even worse is some people don't take into account all the other taxes we pay during the year, i.e. gas, sales, property, liquor, tolls, cigarettes, meals, hotels, etc. Add all that up and you can probably add 10% to your tax bill. Also, keep in mind that it costs much more to live in Taxachusetts than it does in SC. As much as I make now it only started to add up in the last couple years due to some good raises and cashing in some stock options before the market went south. Are we lucky? You bet and we know it. We also know it could change at any point. By the way, the house you see in the background of my sig is my neighbors house. We actually have a small brick Cape on less than 1/4 acre.
Take care,

I think the main argument made on 20/20 was that it didn't have to be WITHELD. You still had to pay it, just you'd pay it come april 15th rather then over the year out of every paycheck.
I got a kick out of hearing that part too about how they created it when they needed more war funds and expected to stop after a few years, then they started coming up with more and more uses for the money until the government was so involved in every minute detail of everyones life that they couldn't even imagine getting rid of it now.
For people who say that the government doesn't control life here that much I say OK, tell me what they don't control. Wiping your a$$, that's about all. You want to put in a new shower, gotta get a government permit. Want to drive a car, get a government license. Drive on government roads, government stop lights that are always timed wrong, the government sets minimum wages and tries to make sure you are safe and comfortable at work (OSHA). Not just here, but in over 2/3 of the countries in the world the US government has a military presence. Sometimes its necessary, sometimes its just because we needed a job for our military. You pay taxes on what you make, what you buy, and anything that you choose to spend your money on. On items such as cars and houses you not only get taxed between 5-10% depending on your area and your bracket, but you also pay government fees to get titles, you pay yearly taxes, you pay sales tax on the tax that you are giving them for the cost of the plates! If you make money in the stock market, you pay tax (a HUGE chunk, not just a little chunk of it) and not only do you pay that tax upfront, but you gotta count that as income, which is then taxed even further. You want to buy a gun? Not only do you pay sales tax but you have to fill out several tax forms in order to get it. If you find $1 on the street you'd think you were lucky, but don't tell anyone cause the IRS will make you report it as income and you'll end up in some new tax bracket where you now owe $1000 more. The list goes on and on and on... but I degress, I have to get back to work

Everything you said is true, except this. The U.S. income tax system is progressive. You'd only pay whatever your marginal rate is on the extra dollar (15 cents, 28 cents, 31 cents, 39 cents).
I think local property taxes are even worse. The nicer you try to make your house, the more they tax you. People that never have kids have to pay a huge amount over their lifetime to fund education. I pay property taxes at a lake cabin to fund education for the area school district, but I live 80 miles away and pay for my own school district!
Have you folks noticed all the talk of a slowing economy and lay offs etc?
Well, my question is when was the last time you heard about the Government having lay offs? or cutbacks?
They don't do 'em that I know of.
Without trying to make this too political of a thread here are a couple of intresting things you can check out if you like...

The fairtax is a 23% sales tax. Now wait before you going thinking oh no, not another tax. This one does away with the income tax and the IRS altogether.
Just my thoughts on it
