Post Big Hole

When I went home this weekend I was driving by one of my fields and I saw a big hole in it. The county tile line had broken and made a big sink hole. Thank god this was a county tile so they get the bill for the repair. The sad thing is that we had an identical hole in the same spot 2 yrs earlier. The hole is about 7 to 8 feet across and at least 8 feet deep.

We get holes like that in downtown Columbus. Last one swallowed a Mercedes right in front of the statehouse!

OK heres a crash course in Iowa soil drainage. In a large part of Iowa, especially where I live the soil will hold alot of water. In order to remove some of this water you bury tile lines. They used to be clay pipes, but now its usually plastic pipe with holes punched in it. Well in my area the county has tile lines buried all over the place and you can tap your tile lines into them so you don't have to run tile long distances or under roads to get to a creek or river to dump the water you take out. If you look in the 2nd picture on the left hand side of it you can see the tile underwater.

We have similar problems in Florida but they are naturally ocurring sinkholes. The limerock gets earoded away by the aquifer and creates a void resulting in a sinkhole, which turns into a lake or pond. Next time you fly over Florida look down and see how many perfectly circular lakes there are in the middle of nowhere.

powerstroke73,
I know exactly what you are talking about. I grew up in Ithaca, Michigan. My uncle owns over 10,000 acres of soybeans, sugar beets and corn. I spent many a summer in the fields growing up. Brings back great memories of life on the farm.

What do you farm? How many acres? Looks like a corn field where that hole is.

I farm in North Central Iowa. We have about 450 acres of corn and soybeans. Its split about 1/2 and 1/2 between the 2 crops. We aren't farming right now, but we're renting the land out. With me being in college and prices the way they are it was one of the smartest things we've ever done. If prices ever get back to where we can afford to farm again we will start again. Thank god we own everything.
