CPU Guys - Key logging?
CPU Guys - Key logging?
A good friend of mine wants to keep tabs on his teenage daughters online chats/accounts/habits/whatever. He asked me (I am somewhat cpu knowledgeable) about how to monitor what goes on (in wake of all the 20/20, 60 minutes, Chris Hanson crap). I told him I'd research it and hopefully get him an answer (this is where this forum steps in
). I'm sure it's not life or death but he'd like to double check for safety's sake.
His cpu is currently running XP with a reg. user account (meaning no separate log ins for the children vs him) and he'd like to keep it that way too. Is there a way to dl some sort of program that does key logging or password recovery for sites like myspace/facebook/email accounts? It would have to be a "stealth" program that he can later go on and check as she (the teen) is somewhat knowledgeable about cpu's and would notice a new icon/new item in the start menu.
He has tried to go on later to check the browser with search habits but the "private data" is always cleared including passwords and sites last visited. I am not that knowledgeable when it comes to stuff like this so I thought I'd ask here first if there is a 100% safe program to run for this sort of thing and where to get it (free vs purchasing?).
Thanks in advance.

Do a search online for "key logger" or "key log". There are numerous software programs that allow you to record every key stroke made while a computer is on. There are also some hardware devises that plug into the keyboard that record key strokes. Each one you can find out passwords for anything, including passwords for facebook/myspace/AIM.

ok one thing to consider, the hot keys and icon preferences must be hidden well.
i dated a girl, she was to terrified i was talking to girls online she put a key logger on my computer. i found it because i rebooted the pc and it popped up. you need to find one that is very discreet. i used it against her, i deleted it, reinstalled under a different location and different hot key. found she was planning on moving in with some other guy. go figure??

This software does it all, and is undetectable on the host machine. I bought it from a private detective who swears by it.
for what it's worth a program called F-secure Blacklight can detect spectersoft. it wont remove it but it does rename all the files to unuseable extensions. But spectorsoft is really the best out there.

The majority of clients allow you to configure chat logging. If you are the administrator, you can create a "guest account" for her with limited privileges. In this manner you can enable a set of security controls including an inability to make any sort of program setting changes, i.e. even if she knows about the logging she can not disable it.
On another note, you don't have to answer but what makes you worry? Natural parental anxiety or other issues (no need to be specifc).

In my case (parental use), if my son were to figure this Blacklight thing out and use it, then he'd come home from school and find a clean spot on the desk where the computer used to sit.
I did a search but I don't want to send him off to dl something malicious.
Not for me, but I kinda probed him (good friend) to see what's up. I guess he caught wind of some shady stuff going on with her friends - he just wants the reassurance (I guess) that "daddy's little princess" is just that.
I'd probably due the same thing if I ever was in that situation.
Thanks for the help so far. If anyone else has anything to chime in about, great. I figure sometime this coming week I'll give him some ideas. I personally like the sounds of the spectorsoft product - does anyone know of a freeware item like that? Or just trials? If not, I don't think he'd mind spending $100 bucks if it truly is that good.
