Post Mike..look here!!!

Mike, thanks for the kind words, but I'm no hero, thats understood....lol (Bruce Springtein song) The first thing every emergency worker learns is, your personal safety first and foremost, only through constant training and use of personal protective equipment, am I able to go where others can't/won't. I don't consider that "putting my life on the line", I want to go home at the end of my shift, I don't consider myself a risk taker(wife does).I'm lucky that I'm in a moderate sized city, in a bigger city many guys get compliant, and accidents happen because they have beat the odds so many times before, and rural(smaller) depts don't get enough experiance and training and sometimes lack the funds for good equipment(even big citys), and still more accidents happen as a result.I will always weigh my safety first, If I think I can effect a rescue(the only instance where I would ever consider betting with my life)The odds had better still be in my favor , I will never be "the Hero" and put my life before someone elses, if I don't make it out, neither do you! The one exception(besides family), is another Firefighter, because I know they would do the same for me.example the 6 Worchester guys, they had people from all over the world for that funeral, would you travel across country to attend a funeral for someone you don't even know? A Firefighter will.

jstang Nice post. I'm glad that you stated "emergency worker" and not just fire fighters. I think we all need to give a little personal Thanks to all Public Safety workers and to our Military. I consider the Military as our largest "emergency workers". I treasure my 9 years in the Military and have seen the best and worst in humanity.
I know have to see the best and worst in civilian life as well, as do most "emergency workers".
Same old saying: hate us when they don't need us, love us when they do.

Hi jstang & murfster,

Great post John, but you & I will always disagree on this, as you *are* putting your life on the line in your line of work, you're just putting it "politely". As are all other "emergency workers" of any kind, in my humble opinion, and we're all extremely grateful!

Be safe,
