Anybody affected with whats going in the US?
Whoa...Whoa...
This isn't exactly the web site to be conversing about investing but....it sounds like many of you expect to be putting down money and being guaranteed a return on investment.
Rule #1 - Every time a stock transaction takes place, a buyer and seller have come to agreement, in most instances the buyer thinks he has made a reasonable deal and the price will escalate. The seller may, on-the-other-hand be selling for a variety of reasons...tuition payments, financial need, or the thought that prices will further decline.
Rule #2 - Individual stocks (the equities of a singular company) are the most volatile investments. Yes, some, and I emphasize SOME, short term traders "make money". Trying to time the market is dangerous business.
Rule #3 - Invest wisely, with sound asset allocation, and stick with it for the long term. If long term for you is 6 to 8 weeks from now, take trip to Las Vegas, the odds are probably better.
Rule #4 - Don't ever complain that the stock
market is in decline. People just like yourself are the ones responsible for gain or decline....it's called confidence. The stock market is an indicator of confidence and rewarder of [financial] potential.
Rule#5 Treat your hard earned money with respect...it deserves it, and so do you. Don't invest heavily in the company you work for, just because you work there, you'll be betting with your heart rather than your head............

Glad I have one of these "cush" fire dept. jobs. As long as there are stupid people in the world, I'll always have a job. I dont think the stupid index is heading down either. Of course I AM NOT refering to any f150onliners.

My daughter came home the other night bragging about her new boyfriend.
I asked, "How many jobs has he got?".
She said, "Four jobs.".
I yell, "Four jobs! What kind of lazy bum is that?".
"I've got twelve jobs! And your poor brother going to school fulltime got eight jobs!".
"No daughter of mine is going to date no steeking bum with no steeking four jobs!"
Kids today! What are you going to do?

The pine mill closure was due in large part to imported pine.It is a world economy you know.Anyone heard of anderson windows? they used to buy the majority of the pine before the plant ceased its operations. The thing about lumber it that it is a commodity.Price goes up when demand is high> so all the sawmills start cutting as much as they can to make that extra money.Unfortunately, this floods the market and the lumber price goes down.To give you a better idea of how these companies can still make money when the lumber prices aren't that great> I will explain how it works at my employer.3 years ago they invested 17 million in building a brand new high tech studmill. It was designed to put out 200,000 board feet of lumber in a 10 hr shift. The company needs at least this much per shift to pay the bill, employees,etc.. After investing around 50,000 more into it, it has produced 394,000 in a single 10 hr shift. The average total for is somewhere near 345,00.That extra 194,000 board is all extra and wasn't taken into consideration when the financial guys gave the go ahead to build this mill.It is like free wood. This mill runs 3 10 hr shifts. so lets see here:
345,000 x3=1,035,000 board feet of lumber per day
so in a work week (4days) this mill produces 4,016,000 board feet of lumber. The number crunchers love to see these big production #s, unfortunately these #s are what is flooding the market.
So if every f150 online member would go out and buy one unit of 8 ft. 2x4 studs you guys would really be helping me out Lol.Seriously though, people see the trains loaded up with the lumber and do call in and place orders for our product. We had to talk home depot in buying a couple units of lumber to see how they would sell.Currently we ship them 7 railcars of kiln dried 2x4 studs a week.So our product sells like hotcakes>job security.
Ramble,ramble,Ramble, I know.I can't help it.

I would not blame day traders. They are what keep the markets liquid. I can not comment on the stock market but the commodity market is kept alive by the speculators. Farmers used this system to protect the price of their crops. So they sold futurs at a price they liked and delivered their crops against the sale. It is the every day buying and selling of bread and butter, cars and household items that realy keeps the economy
moving. When that stops big companies stop making profits and their stocks dwindle. Why is Daimler Chrysler slowing down? People stopped buying their minivans. Now the company is hurting and profits are down so thier stock is worth less. That is the cycle. The stock market is only an aproximate evaluation of the companie's worth based on earnings and profit.

hey, I work at a company that makes automated factory machinery that is used to make car components... I design robots and conveyors that assemble airbag inflators, dc/dc converters, axle assemblies, and other assorted auto components.
2 of our competitors have shut the doors over the past year and we haven't gotten a single new order for machinery in 4 months. It sucks sitting around with no projects, waiting for the inevitable layoffs.
Our business is sometimes called a 'leading indicator' of the market, because our customers place orders 6-12 months before they go into production with new products. No orders, no new products in the near future. Work usually picks up in January but not this year!

funny you should all be mentioning this... today my office cut 20% of its staff... I survived, but its still kinda unheartening... the problem is they never reduce the people that don't work, they reduce the people that do work that the company will suffer lots if there gone.

I was working for a comapny three years ago that recruited me to come there. After, year & half, reorginization caused my job to be eliminated. I work contract then eventually find permanent work for a restructured company. After one year there, I order my SuperCrew. Two weeks after it arrives, the company lays off 40% including me! Go work contract again. Not so bad this time because I end up on assignment at Hooters corporate office (smelled silicone). Now back on permanent job at large company and they ask me to do forecast downsizing headcount over next quarter. Geez, not again!
