Just a question, what if I wanted to do some running and a bit of trail walking 3-5 days a week and take something to help loose some pounds.
Any ideas?
The trails around here are pretty steep, and I have about 1-2 miles of paved area that I consider safe to run.
I am 5'7 and 170-175 and would love to be back down to my weight when I was working in the deep mines. 140-150.
Some things I have already done, I cut out almost all sodas, and started drinking water or Tea.
I was thinking of taking hydroxycut, or something similar and maybe a multivitamin.
Just wondering.

As far as dropping weight, I do not reccomend hydroxycut. Your much better working your *** off and seeing results. Limit/watch your calories would be the first thing to do. Only consume as many as you use during the day. and lots of fruits and veggies. The absolute best way IMO to drop pounds is to have a high intensity cardio plan. But thats just me. Others will disagree. Any cardio that keeps your heart rate up will burn calories and shred fat. It could be sprinting up a hill, Jump rope for 2 mins, do 20 pushups and then walk down the hill and have that be your rest, repeat. Something along those lines.
The reason I don't like supplements like hydroxycut is because you have a pill do the work for you. If you do the cardio you not only lose weight but tone your muscles as well. Your gonna be sore as hell the first couple days but it is so worth it. Trust me!
And of course, 90% of the people on here will hate me for saying this, but, stop drinking beer (if you do) and you will drop pounds.

I would get a lite trail shoe. Or a supportive running shoe.

I will try this out, give it 2-3 months and see where I am at. Should be enough time to loose 5-10lbs maybe.
Thanks for the suggestions.
If you do it 4-5 times a week and watch your calories you will need 6 weeks or so. Thats if your really really dedicated to it.
Also, go to a local magazine stand and buy the newest mens health. TONS of useful information for exactly what you want.

Well I had a nice post going until I hit the backspace button with out being in the text box, so the cliff notes version.
Lowering your salt intake will help with losing water weight.
Agreed with the cutting the beer intake down, lots of carbs there. Good job on quitting the sodas, gatorade is also high in sugars and should be limited intake.
Eat more small meals through out the day, it will keep your metabolism working more. Starving yourself will cause your body to go into storage mode.
High intensity work outs, get that heart rate up and keep it there for the duration of the work out. With lifting weights, low weight and higher reps will help lose the weight.
Hydroxycut is no miracle drug, a couple years ago the FDA actually had it pulled off the shelf because it was causing liver problems in users.
At 5'8 I was about 190lbs in early February, by March I was back down to 175lbs just from eating right and getting back in the gym. I could probably get lower but I'd have to cut out to many things I like and eat the stuff I don't like, but I'm still under what the Army says I can weigh before having to be taped for body fat percentage. When I get back to the wife's cooking I'm sure most of it will come back though.
Good luck and keep putting in work. I've got a Soldier that's lost almost 40 pounds since we deployed in February, all from eating right and lots of cardio. Majority of it in the first few months, it starts to slow down as you lose more and more. You can do, just don't get frustrated.

For shoes, I'd check out the New Balance minimalist. Great shoe, tough, and not a 2 inch heel to cushion improper run form.
Merrill and Innov8 also have minimalist shoes, but I like the NB the best. They have some for more road running, and a trail version. Just get the trail version, they are tougher, but easily road worthy. The road ones have absolutely no traction, and you will eat it as soon as you ver towards the trail.
You really aren't suppose to lift in your running shoes. But if you have no choice, or you circuit train, then a minimalist shoe is you best bet.

Well, I have decided to try something this week, and started yesterday.
When I get up I drink some V-8 juice (1 serving good stuff IMO), shower then eat a bowl of fiber 1.
Take a apple and banana to work for snacks.
Eat lunch, just not as much as I normally eat.
Get home, go for a run with the dog and then eat dinner.
I have been using a stretch of road then going up a old logging trail.
Its steep and between when I ran it Saturday and Sunday my legs are a bit sore.
Hoping it goes well.
Thanks for the advice everyone!

That sounds like a good routine for now. After a while you will need to start increasing the length of your run or run faster to get your heart rate up more.
And one other key thing is to stick with it. I read a study about workouts and it stated that if you miss one of your workouts during the week, you are 65% more likely to miss one the week after.
And one other tip since I am firing away; DRINK LOTS OF WATER!! If you are properly hydrated your run will be much much better and you will have much more energy during the day. I get up at 430am and in the office at 6 and I don't need any coffee or tea or any caffeine to wake me up.
Good luck man.
PM me if you have any questions you don't want to post on the board.

Agreed! Those are so dumb. The people who wear them are such tools!
There was a lot of people using them here in Iraq, but the Army has since made them unauthorized in the PT uniform. Personally I haven't used them though.
